Atlanta Falcons Add Former Third-Round Running Back Trey Sermon During Training Camp

The Atlanta Falcons are continuing to make moves as training camp progresses, with the team’s first preseason matchup just around the corner. As they prepare for their opening exhibition game, Atlanta has added another running back to provide additional depth at the position.

According to multiple reports, the Falcons have signed veteran running back Trey Sermon, a former third-round draft pick, to their training camp roster.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter confirmed the move, posting on X that the Falcons had signed Sermon as a veteran free agent.

Sermon enters Atlanta after spending parts of five seasons in the NFL. Most recently, he appeared in four games for the Pittsburgh Steelers during the 2025 season, although he did not record a rushing attempt during his time with the team.

Sermon entered the league in 2021 after the San Francisco 49ers selected him in the third round of the NFL Draft. During his rookie campaign, he appeared in nine games, including two starts, and rushed for 167 yards on 41 carries. His season was interrupted by an ankle injury that ultimately landed him on injured reserve.

Throughout his NFL career, Sermon has also spent time with the Indianapolis Colts and Philadelphia Eagles.

Over five NFL seasons, Sermon has recorded 134 rushing attempts for 505 yards and three touchdowns.

Where Sermon Fits in Atlanta

With Sermon joining the Falcons during training camp, there is a good chance he will receive meaningful opportunities during the team’s upcoming preseason games.

Atlanta already has an established top of its running back room with Bijan Robinson and Brian Robinson Jr. Sermon will likely compete with Tyler Goodson for the team’s RB3 spot and an opportunity to remain on the roster.

The move also brings a local connection. Sermon is a Marietta, Georgia native who played his college football at Ohio State.

His collegiate career was highlighted by a spectacular 2020 season with the Buckeyes. That year, Sermon rushed for 870 yards and set an Ohio State single-game rushing record with 331 yards against Northwestern.

Now, Sermon will look to use his preseason opportunity with the Falcons to make an impression and earn a role in Atlanta’s crowded running back room.
