College Basketball’s Changing Landscape Could Eventually Push Scott Drew Toward the NBA
College basketball is undergoing unprecedented change, and as the sport continues to evolve through NIL, the transfer portal, and frequent NCAA rule adjustments, Baylor head coach Scott Drew could eventually find the NBA an increasingly attractive option.
The current state of college basketball is more unpredictable than ever. NIL has dramatically reshaped recruiting, the transfer portal has created constant roster movement, NBA prospects are returning to college, and the NCAA Tournament could soon expand. Together, these developments have transformed the responsibilities of college coaches.
Many of the sport’s most accomplished leaders have voiced concerns about where college basketball is headed. Coaches such as Arkansas’ John Calipari, Michigan State’s Tom Izzo, Kansas’ Bill Self, and St. John’s Rick Pitino have all criticized the growing challenges created by the sport’s evolving structure.
Those concerns gained even more attention when reigning national champion Dusty May departed Michigan to become the head coach of the Dallas Mavericks. May cited the increasing demands placed on college coaches as a major factor in his decision, highlighting how the profession has changed in recent years.
If the current trends continue, Scott Drew could eventually face a similar crossroads.
Why the NBA Could Appeal to Drew
Among recent national championship-winning coaches, Drew has experienced many of the difficulties created by college basketball’s rapid transformation.
The 2025-26 season tested Baylor unlike any in recent memory. After losing every point from its 2024-25 scoring production, Drew was forced to rebuild his roster almost entirely from scratch. Although the Bears still developed Cameron Carr into a first-round NBA Draft selection, the season ultimately fell short of expectations.
Following a year filled with lineup changes and roster experiments, questions naturally arise about how long Drew will want to continue navigating the ever-changing college landscape.
The NBA would offer a significantly different environment. Rather than constantly managing recruiting, transfers, and NIL negotiations, Drew could focus almost exclusively on coaching basketball.
His coaching philosophy also appears well-suited for the professional game. Drew has long emphasized shot efficiency, analytical decision-making, and lineup optimization based on advanced metrics such as plus-minus. Those principles closely mirror the approaches embraced by today’s NBA contenders.
Championship teams like the 2023 Denver Nuggets, 2024 Boston Celtics, and 2025 Oklahoma City Thunder all relied heavily on the same analytics-driven concepts that have defined Baylor basketball under Drew for more than two decades.
Why Baylor Remains the Most Likely Destination
Despite the speculation, history suggests Drew is unlikely to leave Waco anytime soon.
Baylor’s rise into a national powerhouse is inseparable from Drew’s leadership. Since taking over one of the nation’s most difficult rebuilding projects, he has transformed the program into a consistent championship contender.
Drew has also turned down major opportunities before. He chose to remain at Baylor despite interest from Kentucky in 2024 and North Carolina in 2026, reinforcing his commitment to the program.
Perhaps most importantly, Drew has repeatedly shown a willingness to adapt as college basketball evolves.
Although Baylor’s experiment with James Nnaji during the 2025-26 season did not produce the desired results, it demonstrated Drew’s openness to trying new roster-building strategies. He has also been transparent about the importance of increased NIL support while continuing to explore innovative ways to keep Baylor competitive.
Those actions should reassure Baylor fans. Rather than resisting change, Drew has consistently adjusted to the sport’s new realities while remaining committed to the Bears.
College basketball may continue to evolve at a rapid pace, but Baylor appears well-positioned to remain a contender under Drew’s leadership. While the NBA could become an intriguing possibility in the future, there is little evidence that his time in Waco is nearing its end.
