Indiana AD Scott Dolson Urges Curt Cignetti, Hoosiers to Avoid Complacency After Championship Season
After reaching the top of college football, Indiana athletic director Scott Dolson is focused on making sure the Hoosiers don’t lose the hunger that fueled their remarkable rise.
Speaking during a Big Ten Network interview, Dolson reflected on the flight home from Miami following Indiana’s championship run, recalling an early conversation with head coach Curt Cignetti about quickly shifting attention to the future.
While he acknowledged the importance of celebrating the program’s accomplishments with players and fans, Dolson emphasized that sustained success requires maintaining the same high standards.
“I don’t want to get complacent,” Dolson explained. “I don’t want our department to get complacent. I don’t want anyone to feel like we’re the smartest people in the room.”
Cignetti’s Mindset Matches Indiana’s Leadership
Cignetti, who recently signed a contract reportedly worth around $13.2 million, has consistently echoed that mentality throughout his coaching career. His message has centered on staying disciplined, avoiding distractions, and treating each season as a new challenge regardless of previous accomplishments.
Indiana enters the 2026 campaign with plenty of reasons for optimism. The Hoosiers return an experienced offensive line while key defensive contributors, including Isaiah Jones and Jamari Sharpe, are back to lead one of the nation’s strongest units.
Continuity on the coaching staff also strengthens Indiana’s outlook. Defensive coordinator Bryant Haines remained with the program despite outside interest, and offensive coordinator Mike Shanahan also returns, allowing the Hoosiers to build on the foundation that produced a championship season.
A Coaching Philosophy Built on Accountability
One of Cignetti’s trademarks has been his direct communication style.
Rather than lengthy speeches, he favors concise, impactful messages that players can immediately absorb. Cignetti has often said he believes coaching points lose effectiveness when they become repetitive noise, preferring to deliver his message with clarity and maximum impact.
That straightforward approach has helped establish a culture centered on accountability and consistent focus, qualities Indiana hopes will prevent complacency as expectations continue to rise.
A New Challenge Awaits
Dolson’s decision to hire Cignetti in late 2023 has transformed the trajectory of the football program.
At the time, Indiana had managed only three Big Ten victories over the previous three seasons. After moving on from former head coach Tom Allen, Dolson conducted a brief coaching search before identifying Cignetti as the clear choice to build a program capable of competing on the national stage.
Now, the challenge has shifted.
Instead of entering the season as an overlooked underdog, Indiana begins 2026 as one of college football’s premier programs. Opponents will view matchups against the Hoosiers as marquee games, making it even more important for Cignetti and his staff to keep the team’s focus on continued improvement rather than past accomplishments.
For Indiana, maintaining the championship mindset may prove just as important as achieving it in the first place.
