2027 Three-Star Edge Rusher Xavier Perkins Commits to Virginia Tech Over Miami
Virginia Tech added another piece to its defensive front this week, securing a commitment from 2027 edge rusher Xavier Perkins, a three-star prospect from Durham, North Carolina.
The commitment was first reported by 247Sports’ Kolby Crawford.

Perkins, a standout at C.E. Jordan High School, revealed his decision on his school’s Instagram page after visiting Blacksburg on April 7. Standing 6-foot-3 and weighing 240 pounds, he becomes the third commit in Virginia Tech’s 2027 class and highlights the staff’s early focus on strengthening the defensive line under head coach James Franklin.
He joins defensive line commits Alexander Taylor and Brock Frisby, giving the Hokies three early additions in the front seven for this recruiting cycle.
Recruiting services 247Sports and On3 both grade Perkins as a three-star prospect. His in-state ranking differs slightly, with 247Sports placing him as high as No. 11 in North Carolina, while On3 ranks him at No. 26.
Virginia Tech beat out a competitive group of Power Four programs for his commitment, including Auburn, Duke, Florida State, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Louisville, Miami, North Carolina, Ole Miss, and Wake Forest. Although Perkins had additional visits planned with Miami, Louisville, and Duke later this summer, he chose to end his recruitment early after his trip to Blacksburg.
On the field, Perkins has proven to be a disruptive presence off the edge. During his junior season in 2025, he totaled 24 tackles, nine tackles for loss, six sacks, and 26 quarterback hurries. His ability to consistently pressure quarterbacks, combined with his size and physicality, makes him a strong projection at the collegiate level.
In addition to football, Perkins competes in track and field, where he recently set his school’s indoor shot put record with a throw of 51 feet, 3 inches—highlighting his power and explosiveness.
His commitment reflects Virginia Tech’s early recruiting approach for the 2027 class: build from the trenches and secure defensive line talent early. With three defensive line commits already, the Hokies are laying a strong foundation up front.
Perkins’ pledge also continues Virginia Tech’s efforts to recruit successfully in North Carolina, a key region for the program.
As the 2027 class continues to develop, Perkins gives the Hokies another important piece in shaping their future defense.
