Carolina Panthers Could Consider Releasing Edge Rusher Pat Jones
The Carolina Panthers haven’t made many cap-related moves this year. Tommy Tremble remains on the roster, Andy Dalton was traded instead of cut, and Pat Jones is still with the team. The only release was A’Shawn Robinson, which saved the Panthers over $10 million in cap space.
Technically, the Panthers could still release players, and doing so might benefit the team. For example, if they pursue another tight end like Jonnu Smith, they would likely need to cut Tremble to free up both salary cap space and a roster spot.
Pat Jones is another candidate for release. Letting him go would free up $4.75 million in cap space and also allow more playing time for other edge rushers. Jaelan Phillips and Nic Scourton are expected to get the majority of snaps, with Princely Umanmielen also needing more opportunities. Including Jones complicates the rotation, especially considering other players like Trevis Gipson and Thomas Incoom.
Jones struggled with injuries last season, missing 13 games, which further limits his role. Analyst Moe Moton highlighted him as a likely cut candidate, noting the Panthers already have an established pass rusher and two high-upside outside linebackers.
While this mirrors past situations like the release of Jadeveon Clowney to make room for younger edges, Jones could potentially benefit from joining a team that can give him more opportunities, making a move to part ways a feasible option.
