K-State Thriving on 2027 Recruiting Trail Under First-Year Coach Collin Klein
In his inaugural season as head coach, Collin Klein is already making waves on the recruiting trail, with numerous prospects committing to Kansas State’s 2027 class. Klein, a former K-State quarterback from 2008-2012, led the Wildcats to a Big 12 Championship and finished third in the Heisman Trophy race during his senior year. Now, 14 years later, he’s back in Manhattan, building the next generation of Wildcats.
K-State’s 2027 class is off to a strong start, currently ranked No. 22 nationally by 247Sports, thanks to a flurry of recent commitments.
Potential QB of the Future
While senior quarterback Avery Johnson enters the season with high expectations under Klein’s guidance, the Wildcats are already planning for life after him. That future may begin with 3-star quarterback Cameron Kruse, who committed to K-State recently. Kruse, a soon-to-be high school senior, started at Olathe West before moving to Tennessee when his father took an offensive coordinator job at Tennessee State. He is expected to return to Kansas for his senior year.
Kruse had an impressive junior season at Page High School in Tennessee, passing for 2,264 yards with 35 touchdowns and only three interceptions. He also rushed for 376 yards and six touchdowns, showcasing the dual-threat skills ideal for Klein’s offense.
April Recruiting Surge
April proved to be a particularly strong month for the Wildcats, as eight of the 11 current 2027 commits joined in that month alone. Klein has broadened K-State’s reach nationally, securing prospects from Oklahoma, Texas, Florida, Arizona, Tennessee, and Georgia, effectively tapping into the heart of SEC territory.
On the same day as Kruse’s commitment, K-State landed a key defensive addition in defensive tackle Dawayne Jones from Booker T. Washington High School in Tulsa. Ranked No. 41 nationally among defensive linemen and the No. 10 prospect in Oklahoma, Jones had briefly reopened his recruitment but quickly reaffirmed his commitment to the Wildcats.
While it’s still early in the 2027 cycle and commitments can change, K-State’s success in April signals a promising future for the program under Klein’s leadership.
