Duke Basketball Checks In on Nation’s No. 1 Overall Recruit

Duke basketball appears to be making an early push for another top-ranked recruiting class, with the Blue Devils continuing to monitor the nation’s No. 1 overall prospect in the 2027 class.

Southeastern Prep Academy (Fla.) point guard Beckham Black remains atop the 247Sports 2027 Composite rankings, and the five-star prospect appears to be a major target on Jon Scheyer and Duke’s recruiting board.

According to Stock Risers’ Jake Weingarten, Duke was among several programs with a coach at Southeastern Prep on Thursday night. The visit was presumably related to Black, as he is currently the only player on the school’s roster with a scholarship offer from the Blue Devils.

Several other major programs also had coaches in attendance, including Arkansas, USC, North Carolina, Kansas, Florida, BYU, UCF, and Georgia Tech. Southeastern Prep’s roster includes two top-10 prospects in the 2027 class: Black and CJ Rosser.

Black, the younger brother of Orlando Magic point guard and former Arkansas standout Anthony Black, received his Duke offer from Scheyer in May. The 6-foot-3, 180-pound guard has already accumulated more than 20 scholarship offers but has yet to announce a list of finalists.

He has, however, started taking official visits. According to 247Sports, Black visited Florida last week and is scheduled to visit Texas this week.

247Sports national recruiting analyst Adam Finkelstein has praised Black’s overall skill set, describing him as one of the safest point guard prospects the recruiting service has evaluated in recent years. Black combines size, competitiveness, confidence, developing shooting and scoring ability, passing instincts, and an advanced feel for the game.

His ability to adjust his scoring and playmaking based on the situation has also stood out. Beyond his basketball IQ, Black possesses strong hands, impressive dexterity, polished footwork, balance, and excellent court vision.

A Potential Challenge for Duke

Duke has finished with either the No. 1 or No. 2 recruiting class in each of the five cycles since Scheyer took over as head coach, making the Blue Devils a serious contender in virtually any high-profile recruitment.

Still, Duke could face an interesting obstacle in its pursuit of Black: the program may already have multiple talented point guards in place for the coming years.

Sophomore Cayden Boozer and freshman Deron Rippey Jr. were both highly regarded five-star recruits coming out of high school. Neither currently appears prominently on most 2027 NBA mock drafts or big boards, meaning they could potentially remain in Durham beyond the 2026-27 season.

At the moment, Black is the only traditional point guard with an offer from Duke.

The Blue Devils currently have one commitment in the 2027 class: Wisconsin Lutheran five-star power forward Kager Knueppel.

Duke has also extended offers to several other elite prospects, including Millennium (Ariz.) five-star combo guard Adan Diggs, Compass Prep (Ariz.) five-star small forward DeMarcus Henry, Eagle’s Landing (Ga.) five-star small forward AJ Williams, Hillgrove (Ga.) five-star small forward Asa Montgomery, Fort Erie International (Ont.) five-star power forward Deng Ngor, and Prolific Prep (Fla.) five-star center Lewis Uvwo.
