Iowa Lands 2026 Mr. Basketball Jaidyn Coon: Impact and Outlook
Jaidyn Coon, the 2026 Iowa Mr. Basketball, officially signed with the Iowa Hawkeyes on Wednesday, giving the program another important addition under first-year head coach Ben McCollum.
McCollum has found success at every stop in his career, winning four national championships at Northwest Missouri State before leading Drake to a 31-win season and an NCAA Tournament second-round appearance. Still, few anticipated he would guide Iowa to an Elite Eight run in his first season—but that success is already helping attract top talent like Coon.
Coon chose Iowa over Big Ten rivals Illinois and Nebraska, further boosting the program’s recruiting momentum.
What his signing means
Projecting long-term outcomes in today’s college basketball landscape is difficult, especially with the transfer portal creating constant roster movement. With hundreds—if not thousands—of players entering the portal, predicting any player’s future years in advance is highly uncertain.
However, Coon’s immediate impact is easier to envision. The four-star recruit reopened his recruitment after decommitting from Creighton in late March, and his decision to sign with Iowa suggests he expects to have an opportunity to contribute right away.
The Hawkeyes have significant roster gaps to fill after losing Tavion Banks and Bennett Stirtz to the NBA Draft, along with Alvaro Folgueiras entering the transfer portal. That leaves openings for both starting roles and key rotational minutes.
Coon’s versatility—capable of playing both shooting guard and small forward—puts him in a strong position to step into one of those roles, regardless of additional portal additions.

Ranked No. 116 nationally and the No. 44 small forward by 247Sports, Coon is also the third-ranked player in Iowa. The Storm Lake High School standout nearly averaged a double-double as a senior, posting 22 points and 9.3 rebounds per game while shooting over 53% from the field.
Recruiting outlook
Coon becomes the second member of Iowa’s 2026 recruiting class, joining four-star guard/forward Ethan Harris, who signed earlier. With his addition, the Hawkeyes’ class currently ranks No. 44 nationally according to 247Sports’ composite rankings.
Overall, Coon’s signing strengthens Iowa’s roster both immediately and for the future, as McCollum continues to build on his early success with the program.
