Oklahoma lands verbal pledge from 2027 edge rusher Samuel Nelson
Oklahoma has picked up a commitment from class of 2027 edge defender Samuel Nelson, who announced Thursday that he is shutting down his recruitment and will join the Sooners.
Nelson revealed his decision on X (formerly Twitter), sharing photos from a dinner with his family and Oklahoma defensive ends coach Miguel Chavis. He also made clear that playing alongside his older brother at Oklahoma was a major factor in his choice.
He explained that everything felt aligned for him, noting that he believes the timing is right and that he’s ready to end the recruiting process and follow his brother to Norman.
Samuel is the younger brother of Matthew Nelson, a 2026 signee with the Oklahoma Sooners football program. Both brothers are from Bryant, Arkansas, and will eventually line up on the defensive front together for Oklahoma.
On the field in his junior season at Bryant High School, Samuel posted 47 total tackles, 12 tackles for loss, 6.5 sacks, and two forced fumbles. He’s listed at 6-foot-3, 230 pounds and is regarded as a consensus three-star prospect, ranked around No. 500 nationally in the 2027 class by 247Sports.
Scouting evaluations highlight his athleticism, effort level, and versatility off the edge, noting his ability to change direction quickly and his potential to add size as he develops.
Nelson chose Oklahoma over other programs including Florida State, Arkansas, and Kansas State. His relationship with the coaching staff, especially Miguel Chavis, helped solidify the decision after he received his offer in late 2025, followed by visits to Norman in the spring.
With his commitment, Oklahoma continues to build a strong 2027 recruiting class, which now includes 20 total pledges and ranks among the top classes nationally.
