Indiana Wins Recruiting Battle Over Ohio State for Four-Star Prospect Reinaldo Perez

Indiana football continued its impressive recruiting momentum on Wednesday by securing a commitment from highly regarded defensive lineman Reinaldo Perez, one of the program’s most significant additions in the 2027 recruiting class.

The four-star prospect chose the Hoosiers over several major Big Ten programs, including Ohio State, Michigan, and Michigan State, further highlighting the growing strength of Indiana’s recruiting efforts under head coach Curt Cignetti.

Hoosiers Pull Top Talent from Ohio State Territory

Perez, a standout at Columbus Academy in Ohio, represents a particularly notable recruiting victory for Indiana given his hometown ties to Columbus, the heart of Buckeye country. Despite receiving more than 30 scholarship offers from programs across the nation—including Florida, Notre Dame, Louisville, and numerous Big Ten schools—Perez ultimately decided Bloomington was the right fit.

According to the 247Sports Composite rankings, Perez is currently rated as the No. 11 player in Ohio for the 2027 class. While Ohio may not produce talent at the same volume as states such as Texas, Florida, or California, landing one of the state’s top prospects is still a major accomplishment for any program outside the traditional recruiting powers.

His commitment also boosted Indiana’s standing in the national recruiting rankings, helping move the Hoosiers into the top 30 on Rivals. The pledge follows another recent recruiting win, as defensive back Brady Scott committed to Indiana earlier in the week.

A Sign of Indiana’s Growing National Reputation

Perez’s decision underscores just how rapidly Indiana’s football program has risen in recent years.

Interestingly, when Perez discussed his recruitment last summer, Indiana was not among the schools he identified as actively pursuing him. At the time, he mentioned programs such as Ohio State, USC, Florida, Michigan State, Purdue, Tennessee, Louisville, Syracuse, and Rutgers as schools in regular contact.

Less than a year later, Indiana not only entered the picture but emerged as the winner in a highly competitive recruiting battle.

The commitment serves as another example of how on-field success can translate into recruiting momentum. Indiana’s strong performances over the past two seasons, particularly along the defensive line, have helped elevate the program’s profile among elite prospects.

One example frequently cited is Indiana’s performance against Oregon during the latter part of the regular season, when the Hoosiers’ defensive front controlled the line of scrimmage against one of college football’s most highly regarded offensive lines.

As Indiana continues to establish itself as a contender in the Big Ten, attracting recruits like Perez becomes increasingly attainable.
