Mets Yet Again Drop Blockbuster Announcement

As the Major League Baseball season approaches September, the schedule continues to move forward, particularly for teams such as the New York Mets, who may be looking to salvage something from a season that has fallen well short of expectations.

That said, the final month-plus of the campaign can still provide players with an opportunity to make their case for a bigger role heading into next season. One player in that position is Mark Vientos, who has been sidelined since early July while dealing with a hand injury.

Ahead of their series against the Chicago White Sox, the Mets received a notable update involving Vientos.

Mark Vientos Headed to AA for Rehab Stint

According to multiple reports, including Vientos’ MLB.com transaction tracker, the Mets are set to send him on a rehab assignment with Double-A Binghamton.

NBC Sports’ David Shovein reported on Aug. 20 that the 26-year-old slugger has been sidelined since shortly before the All-Star break after suffering a fracture in his right hand. Vientos is expected to remain with Binghamton through at least the weekend before potentially returning to the Mets sometime next week.

Before landing on the injured list, Vientos was hitting just .211/.256/.388 with 11 home runs and 35 RBI across 254 plate appearances.

Following a breakout season with New York in 2024, Vientos has struggled to replicate that production at the plate. Still, the Mets have remained committed to his development and continue to provide him with opportunities to establish himself as a key part of the lineup.

Looking at Mark Vientos’ MLB Career

Mark Vientos has now appeared in parts of five MLB seasons with the New York Mets.

He made his major league debut in 2022 but saw action in only 16 games that season. Vientos appeared in 65 games the following year, though his offensive production remained underwhelming.

Things changed in 2024, when Vientos enjoyed a breakout campaign. He played in 111 games and launched 27 home runs while producing a 134 OPS+. However, he has struggled to maintain that level of production since then. In 2025, Vientos hit 17 homers while batting .233 and posting a below-average OPS+.

As Shovein noted, Vientos’ numbers have taken another step backward this season. Through 73 games, he has recorded a -1.2 bWAR while continuing to search for consistency at the plate.

For his career, Vientos has hit 65 home runs across 386 games. He owns a .716 career OPS over 1,328 at-bats.
