Patriots Receive Encouraging A.J. Brown Update After Ankle Injury
The New England Patriots opened their season with a 13-10 loss to the Seattle Seahawks, but the defeat was not their only concern. New wide receiver A.J. Brown was forced to leave the game after suffering a right ankle injury.
Despite the worrying nature of the injury, Patriots safety and team captain Kevin Byard offered a small reason for optimism after the game. Byard said he briefly saw Brown in the training room and was encouraged by how the receiver appeared to be handling the situation.
“I briefly seen him in the training room,” Byard said, according to Patriots on CLNS. “He was in good spirits, so that was good to see.”
The update does not provide any indication of Brown’s potential recovery timeline, but his positive demeanor was certainly encouraging after the frightening sequence that occurred during his New England debut.
Brown Injured While Trying to Make a Catch
The injury occurred early in the third quarter when Brown attempted to make a low catch from quarterback Drake Maye. As he reached for the pass, his right ankle became trapped underneath Seahawks cornerback Nehemiah Pritchett.
Brown stayed on the ground as medical personnel attended to him. He eventually made his way to the sideline before heading to the locker room.
According to NFL.com, Brown underwent X-rays and was officially ruled out before the fourth quarter. Head coach Mike Vrabel did not have a medical update available immediately following the game.
For now, Byard’s account provides the most encouraging information surrounding Brown’s condition, although additional testing will be necessary to determine the seriousness of the injury.
Byard’s Positive Observation Carries Weight
Byard is not simply another player offering an observation from the locker room. The veteran safety joined the Patriots in March after an impressive 2025 season with the Chicago Bears, during which he earned his third first-team All-Pro honor and led the NFL with seven interceptions.
New England subsequently selected Byard as one of six team captains for the 2026 campaign. His experience and leadership make his postgame comments particularly noteworthy.
Brown’s health will now be closely monitored by the Patriots after the organization made a major investment to bring him to New England.
The Patriots acquired the veteran receiver from the Philadelphia Eagles in June, sending Philadelphia a 2028 first-round pick and a 2027 fifth-round selection. The goal was to provide Maye with an established No. 1 receiver who could immediately strengthen the passing game.
Brown showed flashes of that potential before his injury. He finished with three receptions on four targets for 26 yards and drew a 34-yard defensive pass interference penalty, moving the Patriots all the way to Seattle’s 2-yard line. Maye scored on the next play by connecting with rookie tight end Eli Raridon.
Two of Brown’s three catches also resulted in first downs, according to The Boston Globe.
Brown’s Injury Comes After a Disappointing Finish
The timing of Brown’s departure was particularly unfortunate because New England had been in control earlier in the contest.
The Patriots held a 10-0 lead during the third quarter but were unable to score again. Maye threw three interceptions in the fourth quarter, allowing Seattle to complete its comeback.
It would be unfair to attribute the collapse solely to Brown’s absence, but his importance to the Patriots’ offense was obvious. New England acquired him because of his ability to make contested catches, create separation and attract defensive attention as a legitimate downfield threat.
Maye also accepted responsibility for the pass that preceded Brown’s injury. Speaking with The Boston Globe, the quarterback acknowledged that the throw was too low and said he needed to give his receiver a better opportunity to make the catch.
Despite the setback, Maye expressed confidence that Brown would put in the necessary work to get back on the field as soon as possible.
Patriots Have Extra Time to Assess Brown
New England does have some breathing room before its next game. The Patriots will host the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sept. 20, giving Brown more than a week to undergo additional evaluation and begin the recovery process.
Until the Patriots release further medical information, there is no clear indication of how much time Brown could miss.
Still, Byard’s postgame observation provides a welcome bit of positivity. After a concerning ankle injury in his first game with the Patriots, Brown was reportedly in the training room, around his teammates and in good spirits.
