Heat Shift Focus to DeMar DeRozan, Klay Thompson After Missing Out on LeBron James
After LeBron James officially signed with the Philadelphia 76ers, the Miami Heat have quickly adjusted their offseason strategy by pursuing other veteran stars to strengthen their championship aspirations.
Having already built their roster around Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo, Miami is now looking to add another proven scorer on the wing. According to ESPN insider Shams Charania, the Heat have emerged as one of the teams showing strong interest in DeMar DeRozan and are also closely monitoring the situation surrounding Klay Thompson.
DeRozan Emerges as Top Trade Target
Charania reported that Miami, along with the Denver Nuggets and Cleveland Cavaliers, is exploring the possibility of acquiring DeRozan. The six-time All-Star remains one of the league’s most reliable offensive players, valued for his scoring ability, playmaking, and clutch performances.
DeRozan is coming off a productive season with the Sacramento Kings, where he averaged 18.4 points per game, making him an appealing option for teams seeking veteran offensive firepower.
Heat Also Monitoring Klay Thompson
In addition to DeRozan, Miami is keeping a close eye on Thompson’s future with the Dallas Mavericks.
Charania indicated that the Heat’s interest has evolved beyond simple scouting, with the organization evaluating both trade and potential buyout scenarios. Thompson is entering the final season of his current contract, and questions continue to surround his long-term future in Dallas.
The four-time NBA champion originally joined the Mavericks to compete alongside Luka Dončić and Kyrie Irving, but significant roster changes have altered the team’s outlook, fueling speculation that Thompson could seek a better opportunity to contend for another title.
Mavericks Prefer a Trade
NBA insider Marc Stein reported that Dallas would rather trade Thompson than negotiate a contract buyout. However, if the Mavericks fail to find a suitable deal, league executives believe a buyout could still become a realistic possibility.
That scenario would put Miami in a favorable position to pursue the veteran sharpshooter using its remaining financial flexibility.
Miami Weighing Its Options
Following James’ move to Philadelphia, the Heat have turned their attention toward maximizing the rest of their offseason resources. Miami still has three standard roster openings, one two-way contract available, and access to its $7 million Mid-Level Exception (MLE).
The front office must now decide whether to use that exception on DeRozan immediately or preserve flexibility in case Thompson becomes available later in the offseason.
Both veterans address key needs for Miami. DeRozan would provide another dependable scorer and secondary playmaker, while Thompson would bring elite perimeter shooting and championship experience to complement Antetokounmpo and Adebayo.
Heat Exploring Multiple Paths
With training camp drawing closer, Miami continues to evaluate every avenue to improve its roster. Whether through a trade for DeRozan or a trade or buyout involving Thompson, the Heat remain focused on adding another established star to support their new core.
