Michigan Lands Top Ohio Cornerback Target Over Buckeyes
Michigan scored one of its biggest recruiting victories of the 2027 cycle by landing four-star cornerback Monsanna Torbert Jr., a prospect many believed was headed to Ohio State.
For much of his recruitment, the Buckeyes appeared to be the frontrunner. Torbert’s official visit to Columbus generated positive momentum, and Ohio State seemed well-positioned to keep one of the state’s top defensive prospects at home. However, a visit to Ann Arbor during Michigan’s Victors Weekend shifted the outlook.
Recruiting insider Hayes Fawcett reported that Torbert committed to the Wolverines over Ohio State and Indiana. Following his announcement, the Cincinnati native embraced the rivalry with a brief social media message.
“I guess I’m the villain now. GOBLUE.”
The statement underscored the significance of choosing Michigan over Ohio State, a decision that is sure to add intrigue whenever the two rivals meet in the future.
Torbert, who plays at Princeton High School in Cincinnati, is ranked No. 97 nationally in the 2027 class, the No. 14 cornerback in the country, and the No. 4 overall prospect in Ohio. His commitment also gives Michigan its highest-rated recruit in the current 2027 class.
Before selecting the Wolverines, Torbert had previously been committed to Indiana and held scholarship offers from several powerhouse programs, including Texas, Alabama, and Notre Dame.
After decommitting from Indiana in May, recruiting analysts widely expected Ohio State to emerge as the favorite. His June official visit to Columbus only strengthened that belief, as Torbert spoke positively about the Buckeyes and his relationship with secondary coach Tim Walton. At one point, there was even speculation that he might skip his scheduled visit to Michigan if he planned to commit to Ohio State.
Instead, Michigan made a strong impression during that trip. Cornerbacks coach Jernaro Gilford spearheaded the recruitment, with defensive coordinator Jay Hill and assistant coach Kerry Coombs—who has deep ties to Cincinnati—also playing key roles in convincing Torbert that Ann Arbor was the ideal place to develop into an NFL-caliber defensive back.
Following the visit, recruiting projections quickly shifted in Michigan’s favor, and his commitment became official just days later.
The decision marks a notable recruiting win for the Wolverines, who have struggled in recent years to pull elite prospects out of Ohio. Since signing Jordan Marshall in the 2023 class, Michigan had not landed another top Buckeye State recruit of Torbert’s caliber.
For Ohio State, missing out on Torbert is disappointing, particularly because he was one of the state’s premier defensive prospects. The Buckeyes also failed to land Ohio’s three highest-ranked cornerbacks in the 2027 class, with Ace Alston committing to Notre Dame, Kei’Shjuan Telfair choosing Penn State, and Torbert heading to Michigan.
Despite that, Ohio State’s recruiting class remains in strong shape. Ryan Day’s staff has already secured commitments from four-star cornerbacks Deontay Malone and Jaden Carey, along with several other highly regarded prospects, including five-star defensive lineman Marcus Fakatou and 2028 wide receiver Jett Harrison.
While losing Torbert is a setback for the Buckeyes, it is unlikely to define their recruiting class. For Michigan, however, the commitment represents a major victory in one of college football’s fiercest recruiting rivalries, and Torbert’s “villain” remark suggests he understands exactly what his decision will mean every time he returns to Ohio.
