Steelers Bring Back Veteran WR to Boost Competition Ahead of OTAs
The Pittsburgh Steelers are adding experience to their wide receiver group by re-signing Brandon Johnson shortly after the 2026 NFL Draft.
While the team already brought in several rookie receivers—Germie Bernard (Alabama), Kaden Wetjen (Iowa), and Eli Heidenreich (Navy)—Johnson gives the group a familiar, veteran presence as they head into OTAs.
Familiar Face Returns
Johnson isn’t new to Pittsburgh. He originally joined the Steelers’ practice squad in August 2024 after being released by the Denver Broncos. During that season, he was elevated for three games, recording one catch for nine yards.
He later signed a reserve/futures deal in early 2025 but was released with an injury settlement following a foot injury. After brief time with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ practice squad, he returned to Pittsburgh late in the year and finished the season there.
Competing for a Spot
With multiple new additions at wide receiver—including a notable offseason signing in Michael Pittman Jr.—Johnson faces a tough path to making the 53-man roster. Still, his familiarity with the system and four years of NFL experience could give him an edge as a depth option.
At the very least, he provides valuable competition during offseason workouts and remains a strong candidate for the practice squad, with the potential to be called up if injuries arise during the season.
