Mueller signs to a two-year, one-way contract with an average annual value of $850,000.
Newark, NJ — The New Jersey Devils have signed defenseman Mirco Mueller to a two-year, one-way contract worth an average of $850,000 per season, the team announced. Mueller is set to earn $775,000 in 2017-18 before his salary increases to $925,000 in 2018-19.
Devils Executive Vice President and General Manager Ray Shero announced the agreement.
New Jersey acquired Mueller from the San Jose Sharks on June 17, 2017, along with a 2017 fifth-round pick that became Aarne Talvitie. In return, the Devils sent San Jose their 2017 second-round pick, No. 49 overall, which the Sharks used on Mario Ferraro, as well as their fourth-round selection at No. 123. That pick was originally acquired from Nashville and was later dealt to the New York Rangers, who selected Brandon Crawley.
The 22-year-old Mueller spent the first three seasons of his professional career within the Sharks organization from 2014 through 2017, moving between San Jose and its AHL affiliate. During the 2016-17 season, he appeared in four NHL games for the Sharks and recorded one goal and one assist.
Mueller spent considerably more time in the AHL, playing 62 games with the San Jose Barracuda. He finished the regular season with two goals and 18 assists for 20 points before adding five assists in 15 Calder Cup Playoff games.
Across 54 career NHL appearances, Mueller has recorded two goals and four assists for six points while accumulating 17 penalty minutes. He made his NHL debut on Oct. 8, 2014, against the Los Angeles Kings at Staples Center.
Listed at 6-foot-3 and 210 pounds, Mueller is a left-shot defenseman who began his professional career with nine games for Worcester in the AHL during the 2014 season.
A native of Winterthur, Switzerland, Mueller developed through youth hockey programs in his hometown and nearby Kloten before making the move to North America. He spent two seasons with the Everett Silvertips of the Western Hockey League during the 2012-13 and 2013-14 seasons.
Mueller has also represented Switzerland internationally at the IIHF World Junior Under-18 and Under-20 tournaments.
Born on March 21, 1995, Mueller was selected by the Sharks with the 18th overall pick in the first round of the 2013 NHL Draft.
