The Houston Cougars have secured a late addition to their 2026-27 roster following the NCAA’s recent eligibility ruling.
According to On3’s Joe Tipton, former Texas guard Chendall Weaver has committed to Houston after being among the players granted an extra season of eligibility through a recent court decision.
The Mansfield, Texas, native spent the past three seasons with the Longhorns and will now close out his collegiate career with the Cougars, adding an experienced backcourt presence to Houston’s roster.
What Chendall Weaver Brings to Houston
Texas could have remained a potential landing spot for Weaver if he wanted to return to Austin, but Longhorns head coach Sean Miller revealed that the program no longer had an available scholarship spot.
That opened the door for Houston to add an experienced veteran with NCAA Tournament experience who fits the culture that head coach Kelvin Sampson has built with the Cougars.
Weaver began his college career at UT Arlington before transferring to Texas ahead of the 2023-24 season under former head coach Rodney Terry. During his three seasons with the Longhorns, he appeared in 93 games, including 17 starts, while averaging 6.1 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 1.0 assists per contest.
The Mansfield, Texas, native also gained valuable postseason experience, playing in seven NCAA Tournament games during his time at Texas. In a second-round matchup against Tennessee during the 2023-24 tournament, Weaver delivered one of his best performances, scoring 13 points while going a perfect 6-for-6 at the free-throw line.
More recently, Weaver made an impact in the First Four matchup against NC State, recording 11 points, 10 rebounds, and two steals for the Longhorns.
While Weaver’s statistical production may not immediately stand out, his energy and effort are what separate him from many players. He has built a reputation as one of the hardest-working players on the court, consistently diving for loose balls, playing with relentless intensity, and bringing maximum effort on every possession.
His athleticism is another major strength. Weaver possesses impressive explosiveness and leaping ability, allowing him to make plays above the rim on offense and deliver momentum-changing blocks on defense.
Although his offensive game may not be his biggest strength, Weaver’s toughness, defensive mentality, and competitive edge make him an excellent fit for Sampson’s program. His style of play aligns perfectly with the identity Houston has established over the years.
Because of that, Weaver could quickly become a fan favorite once he takes the court for the Cougars during the upcoming season.
