Ohio State Lands in Top Five for 2028 QB as Five-Star WR Nears Decision
Ohio State’s recruiting momentum has remained strong following an active spring and a string of recent commitments. The Buckeyes’ 2027 class has climbed to No. 7 nationally and ranks fourth in average player rating, trailing only the top three programs by a slim margin.
Although the NCAA recruiting dead period has temporarily slowed activity until the end of July, Ohio State continues to generate positive news on the recruiting trail.
One of the latest developments came Saturday, when 2028 four-star quarterback Lukas Prock revealed his final five schools. Ohio State joined Florida, Indiana, Michigan and Notre Dame on the shortlist.
According to the 247Sports Composite, Prock is rated as the No. 6 quarterback and No. 69 overall prospect in the 2028 class, while also ranking as New Jersey’s No. 3 player. With more than 40 scholarship offers, narrowing his choices to five highlights Ohio State’s continued appeal for elite quarterback recruits.
The 6-foot-3, 195-pound signal-caller enjoyed a standout sophomore season, throwing for more than 4,300 yards and 42 touchdowns while completing over 73 percent of his passes. Originally from Massachusetts, Prock transferred to The Hun School in Princeton, New Jersey, after an impressive freshman campaign at Wellesley High School, where he passed for more than 2,100 yards with 25 touchdowns against just four interceptions.
Despite Ohio State’s long history of developing quarterbacks, the position remains a key storyline in recruiting.
Current 2027 quarterback commit Brady Edmunds is reportedly weighing whether to remain committed to the Buckeyes or flip to UCLA. Meanwhile, Ohio State continues to aggressively pursue five-star quarterback Christopher Vargas, the nation’s top-ranked passer in the 2028 class.
Prock now joins the Buckeyes’ list of priority quarterback targets as Ryan Day and his staff look toward the future. Ohio State is well-positioned at the position in the short term, with Julian Sayin expected to lead the offense in 2026 and highly regarded prospect Tavien St. Clair waiting in the pipeline.
Meanwhile, the Buckeyes are nearing a decision from five-star wide receiver Monshun Sales. The No. 2 receiver and No. 8 overall prospect in the 2027 class is scheduled to announce his commitment on Friday, July 17, choosing among Ohio State, Alabama, Indiana, LSU and Texas.
At the moment, Ohio State appears to trail the leading contenders. Current projections suggest Indiana and Texas are in the strongest position to land the 6-foot-5 playmaker, although the Buckeyes remain in contention until a final decision is made. As recruiting has shown repeatedly in the NIL era, commitments can always change.
New wide receivers coach Carlos Hankton has already made an immediate impact, helping retain five-star 2027 receiver Jamier Brown while also securing a commitment from five-star 2028 prospect Jett Harrison, the younger brother of former Ohio State star Marvin Harrison Jr. Even so, Sales may ultimately choose another destination despite Ohio State’s proven reputation for producing NFL-caliber receivers.
The Buckeyes’ track record at wide receiver continues to be among the nation’s best, with a steady pipeline of first-round NFL Draft picks. However, Sales is currently expected to continue his career elsewhere.

Ohio State is also awaiting the decision of four-star defensive lineman Karlos May, who is set to announce his commitment on Saturday, July 18.
The Alabama native is ranked as the No. 11 defensive lineman and No. 120 overall prospect in the 2027 class by the 247Sports Composite. He will choose among Auburn, Georgia, Florida State and Ohio State.
The Buckeyes are viewed as the favorites entering the announcement, with multiple recruiting predictions—including one from Ohio State insider Alex Gleitman—projecting May to land in Columbus. A commitment from May would further strengthen Larry Johnson’s impressive defensive line class, which already includes five-star recruits DJ Jacobs and Marcus Fakatou, along with highly rated four-star Wyatt Smith.
As always, recruiting remains unpredictable, and Ohio State will have to wait until Saturday to learn May’s final decision.
