Oregon Ducks Gain Momentum With Elite Speedster in 2028 Recruiting Class
The days of the Oregon Ducks’ famed “blur ball” offense under Chip Kelly may be in the past, but head coach Dan Lanning and his staff continue to make speed a top priority on the recruiting trail.
That philosophy has already paid off with the additions of five-star receiver Dakorien Moore in the 2025 class and fellow five-star wideout Jalen Lott in 2026. Oregon has also secured commitments from promising 2027 receivers Xavier Sabb and Dakota Guerrant, keeping the program stocked with explosive playmakers.
Now, the Ducks are making an early push for one of the fastest prospects in the 2028 recruiting class.
Oregon Targets Texas Speedster Dillon Mitchell
Oregon has identified four-star receiver and return specialist Dillon Mitchell of C.E. King High School in Houston as a priority target.
Mitchell has quickly built a reputation as one of the nation’s premier athletes thanks to his elite track background. According to Rivals recruiting analyst Sam Spiegelman, the Texas standout has reportedly run a sub-10-second 100-meter dash and posted a blazing 20.22-second time in the 200 meters this spring.
His speed has translated directly onto the football field. Last season, Mitchell totaled 1,779 all-purpose yards and scored 14 touchdowns while helping C.E. King reach the Texas state championship game. Oregon extended an offer to the dynamic playmaker on Jan. 28 and has remained heavily involved in his recruitment.
Speaking with Spiegelman, Mitchell highlighted the connection he’s built with Oregon’s coaching staff, particularly wide receivers coach Ross Douglas and running backs coach Ra’Shaad Samples, both of whom have Texas roots.
“Both the wide receivers coach (Ross Douglas) and running backs coach (Ra’Shaad Samples) are from Texas,” Mitchell said. “They gave me a full presentation of what I do now and that fits what they do. They gave me a system that I fit in.”
Why Oregon Is a Strong Contender
Oregon has established itself as a destination for elite receivers under Lanning. Moore immediately elevated the Ducks’ speed at the position, while Lott has generated significant excitement as Douglas’ first five-star receiver commitment. The future remains bright with Guerrant and Sabb, who are both ranked among the nation’s top receiver prospects by recruiting services.
Mitchell fits the same mold. The 5-foot-8 playmaker is currently ranked as the No. 7 overall prospect in Texas by Rivals, while ESPN lists him as the No. 6 wide receiver nationally in the 2028 class.
There’s also a potential long-term opportunity. Moore could become eligible for the 2028 NFL Draft if he develops into the star many expect, creating an opening for another explosive Texas receiver to step into a featured role. Should Oregon continue building its relationship with Mitchell, the Ducks could position themselves to land yet another elite speed threat from the Lone Star State.
