Phillies Projected as Potential Landing Spot for Orioles Outfielder Taylor Ward
As the MLB trade deadline approaches, the Philadelphia Phillies are expected to remain active in the market after struggling since the All-Star break. Having won just four of their last 14 games, Philadelphia is widely viewed as a team in need of offensive reinforcements, particularly a right-handed hitting outfielder.
While Minnesota Twins star Byron Buxton has been mentioned as a possible target, another name gaining traction is Baltimore Orioles slugger Taylor Ward. The Phillies recently had an opportunity to scout Ward during their series against Baltimore, though he went hitless in five at-bats across the two games.
Ward’s overall numbers this season have been modest, as he’s batting .245 with a .729 OPS, seven home runs, and 30 RBIs in 110 games. However, his elite plate discipline stands out, as he leads the American League with 87 walks, making him an intriguing trade candidate despite never earning an All-Star selection.
Analysts Connect Ward to Philadelphia
CBS Sports analysts Mike Axisa and Matt Snyder both identified the Phillies as a logical destination for Ward before the trade deadline.
Their reasoning centers on Philadelphia’s need for a right-handed power bat in the outfield. They also believe a move to Citizens Bank Park, a more hitter-friendly environment than Camden Yards, could help Ward regain the power production he displayed a season ago.
Ward blasted 36 home runs with 103 RBIs in 2025 while posting a .792 OPS. Although his power dipped earlier this season, his offensive numbers have improved in recent weeks, with his OPS climbing steadily throughout July after sluggish performances in May and June.
Since Ward is scheduled to become a free agent after the season, the Phillies could potentially acquire him without paying the premium typically required for a player under long-term control.
Orioles Could Sell at the Deadline
Baltimore entered the deadline with a 54-57 record, making the Orioles a possible seller as they evaluate their roster for the future.
Ward acknowledged the ongoing trade speculation following Baltimore’s recent loss to Philadelphia, saying he would welcome staying with the organization but understands the business side of baseball.
The veteran outfielder noted that he’s accustomed to dealing with trade rumors after experiencing similar situations during his time with the Los Angeles Angels before being dealt to Baltimore last November. He added that sticking to his daily routine has helped him tune out outside distractions.
Outfield Remains a Priority for Philadelphia
The Phillies’ need for outfield help became even more pressing after right fielder Adolis García suffered a season-ending lat injury earlier this year.
Philadelphia has rotated Gabriel Rincones Jr., Derek Hill, and Bryan De La Cruz into the lineup, but the group has struggled to consistently replace García’s production. That makes an experienced hitter like Ward an appealing option as the Phillies look to strengthen their lineup for the stretch run.
