Phillies Activate Garrett Stubbs, Option Payton Henry to Triple-A

The Philadelphia Phillies made a roster move Tuesday ahead of the second game of their series against the Miami Marlins at loanDepot Park, reinstating catcher Garrett Stubbs from the 10-day injured list while optioning Payton Henry to Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Stubbs had been sidelined since July 18 with inflammation in his left wrist. After returning to the active roster, he immediately rejoined the starting lineup, catching for Aaron Nola and resuming his role as Philadelphia’s veteran backup behind JT Realmuto.

Henry Returns to Lehigh Valley

Henry was promoted to the major league roster on July 24 after Rafael Marchan was placed on the 10-day injured list with left knee patellar tendinitis. Although the Phillies selected Henry’s contract from Triple-A, he did not appear in a game during his stint with the club.

The Phillies confirmed the transaction on X ahead of Tuesday night’s matchup in Miami, announcing that Stubbs had been activated and Henry had been sent back to Lehigh Valley to clear a spot on the 26-man roster.

Stubbs brings familiarity with the Phillies’ pitching staff and remains a trusted defensive option behind the plate. Meanwhile, Henry’s remaining minor league options allowed the organization to keep him in its system while preserving valuable catching depth.

Offense Continues to Struggle

The roster move came before another frustrating performance for Philadelphia’s offense. Miami starter Sandy Alcantara held the Phillies to just four hits over seven scoreless innings, leading the Marlins to a 1-0 victory.

Aaron Nola turned in a solid outing, allowing only a first-inning solo home run to Kyle Stowers across 5 2/3 innings, but the Phillies failed to generate any run support.

The defeat dropped Philadelphia to 57-51 on the season, leaving the club six games behind the Atlanta Braves in the National League East. It also marked the Phillies’ eighth loss in 11 games since the All-Star break, increasing the urgency for the front office as the MLB trade deadline approaches.
