Razorbacks Making Progress in Pursuit of 5-Star Guard King Gibson
Arkansas is emerging as a serious contender for one of the nation’s top recruits in the 2027 class as John Calipari continues to build for the future.
According to Rivals, the Razorbacks have gained momentum in the recruitment of five-star combo guard King Gibson, one of the most sought-after prospects in the country. Arkansas remains in a competitive race that includes programs such as UConn, Louisville and Alabama, but Calipari’s reputation for developing elite guards into NBA talent continues to be a major selling point.
Over his coaching career, Calipari has produced 65 NBA Draft picks, including an NCAA-record 30 lottery selections. His success at preparing guards for the professional level remains one of Arkansas’ biggest advantages on the recruiting trail.
Gibson, a 6-foot-4, 185-pound standout from SPIRE Academy in Geneva, Ohio, holds scholarship offers from an impressive list of schools, including UConn, Louisville, Maryland, LSU, Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, Florida State, Houston, Indiana, Kentucky, Syracuse, Texas A&M and Virginia Tech.
According to 247Sports, Gibson ranks as the No. 5 overall player in the 2027 recruiting class, the nation’s top combo guard and the No. 1 prospect from Ohio.
Calipari recently had the opportunity to evaluate Gibson in person during the Nike EYBL event in Memphis, where the talented guard showcased his all-around offensive game and athletic ability.
Playing for Team United, Gibson averaged 17 points, three rebounds and three assists per game while shooting an impressive 55% from the field, 60% from three-point range and 71% from the free-throw line.
Gibson’s versatility is one of his biggest strengths. Comfortable playing both on and off the ball, he can score efficiently at all three levels. He attacks the basket with confidence, has a polished mid-range game and is a dangerous perimeter shooter with a quick, compact release that makes him difficult to contest.
Beyond his scoring ability, Gibson displays strong court vision and passing instincts, regularly creating opportunities for teammates. While he may not possess elite above-the-rim explosiveness, he compensates with body control, athleticism in open space and the ability to play at multiple speeds.
Arkansas currently holds one commitment in its 2027 recruiting class with five-star point guard Davion Thompson, giving the Razorbacks the nation’s No. 8-ranked class according to the 247Sports Team Recruiting Rankings.
However, Thompson has been linked to a possible reclassification into the 2026 class, meaning Calipari still has significant work ahead as he shapes Arkansas’ future roster.
The 2027 class is loaded with elite talent, including top-ranked prospect Beckham Black, Demarcus Henry, Lewis Uvwo and Gibson. Given Calipari’s history of landing premier recruits and developing future NBA players, Arkansas is expected to remain firmly in the mix for many of the nation’s top high school prospects throughout the recruiting cycle.
