Florida State Adds Four-Star Defensive Back Za’Kari Johnson to 2027 Recruiting Class

Florida State has strengthened its 2027 recruiting class with the addition of four-star defensive back Za’Kari Johnson, giving the Seminoles a much-needed boost in the secondary after recent recruiting setbacks.

The Seminoles had lost commitments from four-star safety Mekhi Williams and three-star cornerback DaYon Cooper since late May, leaving three-star safety Jemari Foreman as the only defensive back pledged to FSU’s 2027 class. Johnson’s commitment helps replenish that group.

On Tuesday, Johnson announced he was committing to Florida State, choosing the Seminoles over an impressive list of programs that included Oregon, Alabama, Ole Miss, Auburn, Miami, Texas, and Georgia.

Johnson recently accelerated his recruitment by reclassifying from the 2028 class to the 2027 cycle. He is set to play his senior season at Carol City High School in Miami after making the move.

Florida State has been involved in Johnson’s recruitment for nearly a year. Safeties coach Evan Cooper extended an offer last fall during Johnson’s visit to Tallahassee for the Seminoles’ victory over East Texas A&M.

Johnson is expected to return to campus for an official visit in September when Florida State hosts SMU on Labor Day weekend.

Although he has played multiple positions in high school, including offense, the Seminoles project Johnson as a defensive back. His versatility gives him the ability to develop at either cornerback or safety at the collegiate level.

As a sophomore at Plantation High School, Johnson showcased his all-around athleticism. He threw for 551 yards with seven touchdown passes and three interceptions while rushing for 777 yards and nine touchdowns on 73 carries.

Defensively, he recorded 10 tackles, one fumble recovery, four pass breakups, and a 99-yard interception return for a touchdown. He also made an impact as a kick returner on special teams.

The 6-foot-1, 196-pound prospect is ranked No. 349 nationally, No. 21 among athletes, and No. 31 overall in Florida for the 2027 recruiting class, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings.
