Padres’ Mason Miller Closing In on Remarkable Franchise Milestone
He may make history the next time he takes the mound.
San Diego Padres All-Star closer Mason Miller is on the brink of a franchise record after another dominant outing. On Sunday, he sealed a series win over the Los Angeles Angels with a perfect inning, stretching his scoreless streak to 32.2 innings.
The current Padres record belongs to Cla Meredith, who threw 33.2 consecutive scoreless innings in 2006. Miller could surpass that mark as soon as his next appearance if he records four outs, though it’s more likely he breaks it across two outings if he continues his current form. Given how he’s pitching, that seems well within reach.
So far this season, Miller has been nearly untouchable. In 11.1 innings, he’s allowed just two hits and two walks while striking out 27 batters. But beyond his overpowering stuff, his consistency stands out most to manager Craig Stammen, who praised Miller’s ability to maintain the same composure every time he steps on the mound.
Fernando Tatis Jr. echoed that confidence, saying the team feels the game is essentially over once the bullpen, led by Miller, takes control late.
Miller has backed that up, converting all eight of his save chances and finishing 10 games. Despite performing like one of the league’s best pitchers, he has downplayed his hot start, describing it as part of the natural ups and downs of baseball and emphasizing the importance of staying focused over the full season.
Already making waves across MLB this year, Miller now has a chance to add his name to Padres history—less than a year after arriving in San Diego.
