Royals Call Up Rising Prospect to Strengthen Bullpen
The Kansas City Royals are looking to shake things up as they continue to struggle. Despite a 3-2 win over the Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday, the team is still facing difficulties, with a 30-27 record that keeps them in fourth place in the American League Central. They’ve also lost ground in the Wild Card race, but the season is far from over, and June brings an opportunity for a fresh start.
To help boost their bullpen, the Royals have called up reliever Andrew Hoffman. The move comes after a heavy workload for the bullpen on Tuesday, during a scheduled bullpen day. While Hoffman may be somewhat unfamiliar to some, his strong performance in the minors this season made him a deserving candidate for a promotion.
At Triple-A Omaha, Hoffman has been impressive. After a rough 6.82 ERA last year, he’s turned things around with a 2.84 ERA in 25 1/3 innings over 19 appearances this season. He’s also striking out more than 10 batters per nine innings and boasts a solid 2.24 FIP.
In a corresponding move, the Royals optioned left-hander Evan Sisk back to Triple-A. At 25, Hoffman has yet to make his Major League debut, and it’ll be interesting to see how he performs at the big league level in the coming days.
