Florida State Loses Out on Key Tight End Target to Ole Miss
Florida State continues to search for a second tight end in its 2027 recruiting class, but that pursuit suffered another setback this week.
After gaining momentum on the recruiting trail in June, the Seminoles are still looking to build out #Tribe27 as recruiting activity begins to slow ahead of fall camp. One of the staff’s priorities has been adding two tight ends in the class, but the list of available targets continues to shrink.
Colton Johnson Commits to Ole Miss
Three-star tight end Colton Johnson announced his college decision on Thursday, choosing Ole Miss over a group of finalists that included Florida State, Alabama, Indiana, North Carolina, and Purdue.
Johnson had been trending toward a commitment in recent weeks before officially revealing his decision after discussing it with his family.
His commitment is a tough loss for the Seminoles, as he was one of the few remaining uncommitted tight ends with whom Florida State had built significant recruiting momentum.
Seminoles Face Fewer Options
Florida State intensified its pursuit of Johnson in January after hosting him for Junior Day. The Tennessee standout later returned to Tallahassee for an official visit on June 12 while also taking visits to the other schools in contention.
Despite those efforts, the Seminoles were unable to secure his commitment, leaving the coaching staff with even fewer options as it looks to pair another tight end with three-star pledge Connor Winn, who committed to Florida State more than a year ago.
The Seminoles have also evaluated international prospect Elias Wilson after bringing him to campus for a workout last month, though the program has yet to extend a scholarship offer.
Johnson Brings Strong Production
Johnson is coming off an impressive junior season at Upperman High School, where he hauled in 37 receptions for 615 yards and four touchdowns.
The 6-foot-4½, 235-pound prospect is ranked No. 633 nationally, the No. 34 tight end in the 2027 class, and the No. 28 overall recruit in Tennessee, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings.
With Johnson now off the board, Florida State will need to identify new targets quickly if it hopes to sign a second tight end before the 2027 recruiting cycle comes to a close.
