Timberwolves Could Pursue Kevin Durant in Another Blockbuster Trade

The Minnesota Timberwolves shook up the Western Conference earlier this offseason by acquiring LaMelo Ball from the Charlotte Hornets.

While the move instantly made Minnesota one of the league’s most intriguing teams, it didn’t necessarily make them better or worse overall. The Timberwolves added a dynamic 24-year-old playmaker to ease the offensive burden on Anthony Edwards, but the deal came at the cost of versatile big man Naz Reid, whose scoring, defense, and outside shooting were valuable pieces of the roster.

Jaden McDaniels can help fill some of the frontcourt responsibilities, but he’s generally more effective on the wing. That could motivate Minnesota to pursue another major trade—this time targeting Houston Rockets superstar Kevin Durant.

Durant Would Give Minnesota Another Elite Offensive Weapon

Adding Durant would provide the Timberwolves with a proven star who still ranks among the NBA’s top scorers. Standing nearly seven feet tall, he would fit naturally alongside Edwards and Ball as the team’s starting power forward while giving Minnesota one of the league’s most dangerous offensive lineups.

One hypothetical trade would send Durant to Minnesota in exchange for Rudy Gobert, Donte DiVincenzo, Terrence Shannon Jr., and a 2029 first-round pick swap.

Losing Gobert would weaken the Timberwolves’ elite defense, while parting with promising young wing Terrence Shannon Jr. would also be difficult. However, Durant’s offensive production could significantly raise Minnesota’s championship ceiling and strengthen its chances against Western Conference contenders like the Oklahoma City Thunder and San Antonio Spurs.

If the deal happened, the Timberwolves’ starting lineup could feature LaMelo Ball, Anthony Edwards, Jaden McDaniels, Kevin Durant, and rookie center Joan Beringer—a group loaded with scoring potential.

Trading Gobert Would Be a Difficult Decision

Moving on from Gobert would not be an easy choice. His defensive impact has been enormous, particularly in the playoffs, where he helped limit Nikola Jokić during Minnesota’s series victory over Denver. Gobert’s rim protection allows the Timberwolves’ perimeter defenders to pressure opponents more aggressively, knowing they have one of the NBA’s best interior defenders behind them.

Without Gobert, much of that responsibility would fall on Beringer, who possesses considerable upside but remains largely untested at the NBA level.

Does Durant Make Minnesota a Title Contender?

From an offensive standpoint, the argument is straightforward. Even at 37 years old, Durant continues to average around 25 points per game while shooting efficiently from the field. Pairing his scoring ability with Edwards’ explosive attacking style and Ball’s playmaking could create one of the league’s most potent offensive trios.

The biggest question is whether that offensive upgrade would outweigh the defensive value Gobert provides. If it does, Minnesota could have enough firepower to make a legitimate run to the NBA Finals.

Whether Houston would seriously consider moving Durant remains uncertain, although recent speculation suggests he may not be completely untouchable. For the Timberwolves, however, the idea is compelling enough to warrant serious discussion.
