Notre Dame Secures Commitment From Top Linebacker Roman Igwebuike

Notre Dame strengthened its 2027 recruiting class on Saturday by landing a commitment from highly regarded linebacker Roman Igwebuike, one of the Fighting Irish’s top remaining recruiting priorities.

The Chicago native stars at Mt. Carmel High School, one of Illinois’ most successful football programs with more state championships than any other school in the state.

Fighting Irish Fill Major Need at Linebacker

Although Notre Dame’s 2027 recruiting class has consistently ranked among the nation’s best, linebacker had become a glaring need after four-star prospect Amarri Irvin reopened his recruitment and committed to Virginia Tech earlier this year.

Igwebuike’s pledge fills that void in a significant way. Widely regarded as one of the country’s top 10 linebackers and one of the Midwest’s premier recruits, he gives the Fighting Irish a cornerstone defender for the class.

Elite Prospect Chooses Notre Dame

Recruiting services rank Igwebuike among the nation’s top overall prospects, with 247Sports placing him No. 123 nationally in the 2027 class. His recruitment attracted many of college football’s biggest programs, including Florida, Georgia, Miami, Michigan, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Ole Miss, Oregon, Texas, and USC.

In the end, he selected Notre Dame over fellow finalists Indiana, Tennessee, and Missouri.

Last season, Igwebuike played a key role in leading Mt. Carmel to another state championship, recording 111 tackles as the Caravan captured the program’s 17th state title.

What’s Next for Notre Dame?

With Igwebuike now on board, Notre Dame has addressed one of its biggest remaining needs in the 2027 cycle and is nearing the completion of another elite recruiting class.

He joins fellow Chicago standout David Folorunsho, one of the nation’s top defensive line prospects, giving the Fighting Irish another strong recruiting presence in the city.

Notre Dame is also in the mix for defensive tackle Brayden Parks of Brother Rice High School, who is reportedly deciding between the Fighting Irish and Oregon. Landing Parks would further strengthen an already impressive defensive front.

Meanwhile, Notre Dame is expected to continue monitoring the recruitment of Texas A&M commit Kaden Henderson. Although flipping the highly regarded linebacker may be a long shot, Henderson remains one of the nation’s top defensive prospects and will be worth watching as the recruiting cycle progresses.
