Steelers Bolster Secondary by Signing Veteran Safety

The Pittsburgh Steelers have strengthened their defensive backfield by signing veteran safety Rayshawn Jenkins to a one-year contract as training camp continues.

After the first week of camp, safety depth had become one of the team’s biggest concerns. While the starting duo and veteran backup Darnell Savage remain in place, Pittsburgh lacked experienced options behind them. The addition of Jenkins addresses that need.

Former NFL safety Jahleel Addae was the first to report the signing, noting that Jenkins brings a decade of NFL experience, versatility, and leadership to the Steelers’ secondary.

Jenkins entered the league as a fourth-round selection in the 2017 NFL Draft. During his nine-year career, he has played 132 games for the Los Angeles Chargers, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Cleveland Browns, making 92 starts. He has recorded more than 100 tackles in two different seasons, most recently in 2023 with Jacksonville, while also producing 11 interceptions and 34 passes defended throughout his career.

Last season with Cleveland, the 32-year-old appeared in all 17 games, primarily serving as a backup. He started three contests and finished the year with 45 tackles and one interception.

His arrival gives Pittsburgh a reliable and experienced fourth safety, adding valuable depth to the defense.

Before Jenkins’ signing, several younger defensive backs had impressed during the opening week of training camp. Second-year safety Jack Henderson emerged as one of the standout performers, earning extended snaps with the first-team defense and establishing himself as one of camp’s early surprises.

Other young defensive backs, including Daylen Everette, Tamon Lynum, and Darly Porter Jr., also flashed their potential, helping transform what was once viewed as a weakness into a promising position group.

With Jenkins joining the roster, opportunities for younger players—particularly Henderson—may become more limited. However, strong performances could still allow them to earn meaningful roles. The signing reflects the Steelers’ preference for adding veteran experience while continuing to evaluate their developing talent.
