Alabama Building Strong Foundation for 2028 Recruiting Class
With Kalen DeBoer’s third season at Alabama set to begin, the spotlight on the Crimson Tide remains as intense as ever.
Although Alabama has landed top-six recruiting classes in each of DeBoer’s first two full cycles, the program currently sits at No. 33 in the Rivals Industry Team Recruiting Rankings for the 2027 class. Even so, the coaching staff continues to push aggressively on the recruiting trail—especially with the 2028 cycle.
The latest addition came Sunday when four-star linebacker Tysir Young of Middletown, Delaware, announced his commitment to the Crimson Tide. Young received his Alabama offer just four months ago and quickly made the SEC powerhouse his choice.
Ranked as the No. 109 overall prospect and the No. 7 linebacker in the 2028 class by the Rivals Industry Rankings, Young said Alabama’s atmosphere and recruiting approach made a lasting impression.
“The moment I stepped on campus, it felt different from every other place I’d visited,” Young said. “I had a feeling Alabama could be the school for me, and the way the coaches continued to recruit me only reinforced that feeling.”
Young’s commitment gives Alabama seven pledges in its 2028 recruiting class—the most of any program at this early stage. He also becomes the fourth blue-chip prospect to join the class before the start of his junior season.
Quarterback Talent Leads Alabama’s Early Haul
Young is the fourth player to commit to Alabama during the month, joining a growing list of highly regarded prospects.
The biggest commitment so far came less than three weeks earlier when four-star quarterback Kingston Preyear from Benjamin Russell High School in Alexander City, Alabama, pledged to DeBoer and the Crimson Tide.
Preyear said his final visit to Tuscaloosa solidified his decision after quarterbacks coach Nick Sheridan and offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb—along with the rest of the staff—made it clear they envisioned him leading Alabama’s offense.
“It was that last visit that changed everything for me,” Preyear said. “After I threw, the coaches told me they believed I belonged at Alabama. My family and I were excited, we prayed about it, and a couple of weeks later I knew it was the right decision.”
Preyear is rated as the No. 57 overall player and the No. 4 quarterback in the 2028 class. Alabama also holds a commitment from Richmond, Virginia, quarterback Charles Scott, a three-star prospect ranked No. 36 at his position, who committed in May.
The Crimson Tide’s impressive group also features four-star cornerback Braylen Gibbs of Knoxville Catholic (Tennessee) and four-star offensive tackle Anthony Blalock Jr. from Austintown Fitch (Ohio).
Young also strengthens an already impressive linebacker haul. He joins fellow linebacker commitments Dustin Henry of St. Frances Academy in Maryland and Ryquan Butler from Loachapoka High School in Alabama, giving the Crimson Tide three linebacker pledges in the 2028 cycle.
While Alabama still has work to do with its 2027 recruiting class, the program has positioned itself well for the future by assembling one of the nation’s strongest early groups in the 2028 cycle.
