Big News for TCU Horned Frogs

Two Weeks Until Kickoff: What Stands Between TCU and the Big 12 Championship?

The TCU Horned Frogs have a realistic opportunity to make their way back to the Big 12 Championship Game, but the road to Arlington will not be easy. With several strong teams expected to compete near the top of the conference, TCU could have very little room for error throughout the 2026 season.

TCU has not returned to the Big 12 Championship Game since its memorable 2022 season, when the Horned Frogs reached the College Football Playoff. Entering this season, preseason projections have generally placed TCU around sixth in the Big 12, meaning the Frogs are viewed as a team just outside the conference’s top group of contenders.

Still, TCU has several opportunities to control its own path toward the championship and potentially put itself in position for another College Football Playoff appearance.

TCU Has the Chance to Control Its Own Destiny

TCU’s schedule could play a major role in determining its postseason chances. The Horned Frogs will face four of the five teams projected to finish ahead of them in the Big 12: Texas Tech, BYU, Utah and Arizona.

Those games provide TCU with direct opportunities to improve its position in the conference standings. Beating several of those highly regarded opponents could give the Frogs a significant advantage in the race for one of the two spots in the Big 12 Championship Game.

The schedule, however, is far from easy. TCU will have to consistently find ways to win against quality competition, especially once the conference portion of the schedule gets difficult. Avoiding three Big 12 losses should be a major priority if the Frogs want to maximize their chances of reaching the championship game.

Since 2020, no team has entered the Big 12 Championship Game with three or more conference losses. That history makes every conference game especially important for TCU.

An undefeated season would obviously be the ideal scenario, but the Frogs may not need to run the table. If TCU can reach October without a loss and then continue winning throughout the month, it would give the team some much-needed breathing room before entering a challenging November stretch.

How Many Big 12 Losses Can TCU Afford?

Even if TCU suffers two losses during the season, a championship-game appearance would still be possible. Historically, however, two conference losses can put a team in a difficult position when tiebreakers come into play.

Since the Big 12 Championship Game was established, the participants have traditionally been teams with one loss or fewer. When TCU loses a game or two, the Frogs could find themselves relying on tiebreaker scenarios and results from other teams to secure a championship-game berth.

There have been several examples of teams finishing with only two conference losses and still missing the championship game.

In 2021, Oklahoma finished 7-2 in Big 12 play but failed to reach the championship game after losing the head-to-head matchup against Baylor, who also finished 7-2. Oklahoma faced a similar situation in 2023, when the Sooners missed the championship game after losing the head-to-head matchup against Oklahoma State.

The 2024 season provided an even more complicated example. Arizona State, Iowa State, BYU and Colorado all finished 7-2 in conference play, creating a four-team tie. The Big 12 had to rely on tiebreaker procedures, including records against common opponents. After evaluating the results, Arizona State and Iowa State earned spots in the championship game.

Utah experienced a different version of the same problem in 2025. The Utes finished with only two conference losses but were left out because Texas Tech and BYU each suffered just one Big 12 defeat.

For TCU, the message is clear: controlling its own destiny would be the best-case scenario. But one or two setbacks could quickly force the Horned Frogs to watch the standings and hope other Big 12 results go their way.

The Four Big 12 Contenders in TCU’s Way

A competitive Big 12 could actually benefit TCU. The more the top teams challenge one another, the greater the possibility that the conference race becomes tightly packed. That could create opportunities for the Horned Frogs to move up the standings.

Texas Tech, BYU, Utah and Arizona are all projected to have stronger championship chances than TCU entering the season. However, the Frogs will have opportunities to directly challenge each of them.

Texas Tech

Texas Tech enters the season as one of the conference favorites and is projected to finish at the top of the Big 12 for the second straight year.

Compared with some of the other contenders, the Red Raiders appear to have a more manageable schedule. Their biggest challenges include games against Houston, Arizona and TCU.

That makes the TCU matchup especially important. If the Horned Frogs can knock off Texas Tech, they could significantly alter the conference race while strengthening their own championship hopes.

BYU

BYU reached the Big 12 Championship Game last season and will enter 2026 looking to rebound from a 34-7 loss to Texas Tech.

The Cougars face a considerably more difficult schedule than the Red Raiders. Their season begins with a potentially challenging Week 2 matchup against Arizona, while their trip to TCU in early October could become one of the most important games of their season.

BYU also faces Notre Dame. Although that matchup will not count toward the Big 12 standings, a difficult game against the Fighting Irish could affect the Cougars physically and mentally heading into their road matchup with UCF the following week.

The schedule gets even more challenging with a road trip to Utah. BYU has plenty of opportunities to prove itself, but the difficult slate could also create openings for TCU and other contenders.

Utah

Utah narrowly missed the championship game last season despite finishing with only two conference losses. The Utes appear to have a somewhat more favorable route this year.

Among their most important games are matchups against BYU, a road game at Arizona and a trip to TCU.

For the Horned Frogs, the matchup with Utah could carry major consequences. A victory would not only help TCU’s conference record but could also prevent one of the teams competing directly for a championship spot from gaining an advantage.

Arizona

Arizona is another team looking to make history in the Big 12. The Wildcats are hoping to reach the conference championship game for the first time since joining the league in 2024.

Their schedule includes games against the other major contenders, along with a road matchup against Kansas State and a home game against Arizona State.

Because Arizona will face several of the teams competing near the top of the standings, its results could have a significant impact on the conference race.

Can TCU Make It Back to Arlington?

TCU does not necessarily need a perfect season to return to the Big 12 Championship Game. What the Horned Frogs do have is something extremely valuable: direct opportunities against several of the teams expected to compete for the conference title.

Texas Tech may have the most favorable schedule among the leading contenders, but TCU will have chances to challenge BYU, Utah, Arizona and other potential contenders throughout the season.

The key will be limiting mistakes and taking advantage of those head-to-head opportunities. If TCU can defeat enough of the teams standing between it and the top of the Big 12 standings, the Frogs may not need much outside help.

A strong start could be especially important. Building momentum before the difficult November schedule would give TCU some margin for error when the stakes become even higher.

The path back to Arlington is certainly challenging, but it is far from impossible. TCU has the schedule, the opportunities and the direct matchups necessary to make a run. Now, the Horned Frogs will have to turn those opportunities into wins.
