Gamecocks Dealt Another Major Blow

South Carolina Wide Receiver Depth Takes a Hit After Season-Ending Injuries

South Carolina received some difficult news Sunday afternoon as wide receivers Jayden Sellers and Jayden Gibson were both ruled out for the 2026 season with lower-body injuries. Sellers was expected to take on a larger role in the Gamecocks’ offense after showing flashes as a true freshman, while Gibson arrived from Oklahoma hoping to make an impact after dealing with injuries of his own.

With both receivers now sidelined, South Carolina’s wide receiver depth will be tested heading into the 2026 season.

Wide Receiver Depth Takes a Hit

With Sellers and Gibson unavailable, the Gamecocks’ projected wide receiver rotation could look like this in Week 1:

  • Starters: Nyck Harbor, Nitro Tuggle, Mazeo Bennett Jr.
  • Depth: DJ Black, Donovan Murph, Malik Clark, Jordon Gidron, Charly Mullaly

The injuries create an opportunity for several younger players, particularly Donovan Murph, Malik Clark, and Jordon Gidron.

Murph could benefit the most from the additional playing time. The sophomore appeared in all 12 games last season, catching 14 passes for 197 yards and a touchdown. His 14.1 yards per reception ranked fourth on the team among players with at least 10 receptions.

Gidron reclassified into the 2025 recruiting class and redshirted last season after appearing in two games against South Carolina State and Coastal Carolina. He did not record a statistic in either appearance.

Clark also redshirted in 2025 but saw action in four games against South Carolina State, Oklahoma, Ole Miss, and Coastal Carolina. He finished the season with one reception for nine yards, which came in the win over Coastal Carolina.

Losing Sellers is particularly significant because of the potential he showed late in his freshman season. He was expected to have a much larger role in 2026, and replacing those projected snaps will require contributions from the rest of the room.

Head coach Shane Beamer and newly hired offensive coordinator Kendal Briles will likely need Nyck Harbor, Nitro Tuggle, and Mazeo Bennett Jr. to take on expanded responsibilities. Among the younger receivers, Murph is the player to watch as the most likely candidate to absorb some of the opportunities Sellers would have received.

The Gamecocks still have talent at wide receiver, but the margin for error has become much smaller with two players lost for the season.
