Guardians Send Bo Naylor to Brewers in First Trade Deadline Deal
The Cleveland Guardians kicked off their activity ahead of the 2026 MLB trade deadline by completing a deal with the Milwaukee Brewers. On Saturday, Cleveland traded catcher Bo Naylor and left-handed reliever Codi Heuer in exchange for right-handed reliever Craig Yoho and center fielder Blake Perkins.
The trade appears to address needs for both organizations. The Guardians receive immediate bullpen help, while Milwaukee adds two players who could provide depth and contribute at the major league level down the road.
Yoho Strengthens Cleveland’s Bullpen
Yoho joins Cleveland after posting a 3.15 ERA and a 2-0 record over 20 innings in 15 appearances, including six games finished. Although he has yet to earn a save, he has demonstrated excellent command while primarily pitching in lower-leverage situations.
The 26-year-old enters with a WHIP below 1.00 this season and a career mark of 1.058 across all levels. While still developing, Yoho is expected to play a meaningful role in a Guardians bullpen that has struggled with consistency throughout the year. His age and upside also give Cleveland’s coaching staff an opportunity to continue refining his game.
Perkins Adds Depth, But Questions Remain
Blake Perkins provides another outfield option, though his fit with Cleveland is less clear. The Guardians already have several outfielders competing for playing time, although Perkins does bring a right-handed bat to the roster.
His offensive production has been underwhelming throughout his major league career. In 297 games over four seasons, he owns a .223 batting average with a .636 OPS. This season has been even more challenging, as he has hit just .157 with 14 hits in 101 plate appearances across 55 games, while recording 10 walks and 22 strikeouts, mostly in pinch-hitting duties.
Neither Yoho nor Perkins is expected to dramatically change the roster, but Yoho could become an important building block as Cleveland continues reshaping its bullpen for the remainder of the season.
End of an Era for Bo Naylor
Naylor’s departure closes the chapter on a player once viewed as Cleveland’s catcher of the future. Drafted 29th overall in the 2018 MLB Draft, he quickly climbed through the organization’s farm system and was expected to become the franchise’s long-term solution behind the plate.
Despite flashes of potential, Naylor was unable to establish himself consistently, both offensively and defensively. His future with the club became increasingly uncertain after the Guardians acquired catcher Patrick Bailey from the San Francisco Giants, a move that signaled a shift in the organization’s plans.
Heuer Gets Fresh Opportunity
Including Codi Heuer in the trade also helps create additional pitching opportunities at Triple-A Columbus for the Guardians. For Milwaukee, Heuer provides a left-handed relief option who can serve as organizational depth and potentially earn call-ups to the major league roster when needed.
Following the trade, both Naylor and Heuer are expected to report to Triple-A Nashville as they begin the next stage of their careers with the Brewers organization.
