Miami Heat Connected to NCAA Champion as Giannis Situation Remains Unclear
As the NBA Draft approaches, the Miami Heat continue evaluating prospects while uncertainty surrounds their pursuit of superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo.
One player who has emerged on Miami’s radar is Yaxel Lendeborg. During a media session in San Francisco on June 11, Lendeborg revealed that the Heat were among several teams that have worked him out ahead of the draft. He also noted that additional workouts with the Los Angeles Clippers and Atlanta Hawks could still be on his schedule.
Heat Evaluating Options at No. 13
Miami currently owns the 13th overall selection in the 2026 NBA Draft and is expected to thoroughly assess potential prospects. However, questions remain about whether the team will ultimately keep the pick or use it in a trade package.
Lendeborg is one of the more intriguing names in this year’s draft class, making him a logical target for the Heat’s pre-draft evaluation process.
Lendeborg’s Rise to National Prominence
Lendeborg took an unconventional route to becoming a top NBA prospect. He spent three seasons at Arizona Western College before transferring to University of Alabama at Birmingham, where he played two seasons.
In his final year at UAB, he averaged 17.7 points and 11.4 rebounds across 37 games, establishing himself as one of the nation’s most productive players.
Although he initially declared for the 2025 NBA Draft, Lendeborg ultimately returned to college basketball and transferred to University of Michigan.
His lone season with the Wolverines proved highly successful. Over 40 appearances, he averaged 15.1 points, 6.8 rebounds, 3.2 assists, and 1.2 blocks while shooting 51.5 percent from the field. His performance earned him numerous accolades, including First-Team All-Big Ten honors, Big Ten Player of the Year, All-American recognition, and an NCAA championship.
Could Miami Trade the Pick?
While Lendeborg remains a compelling option, Miami’s draft plans could change depending on developments involving Antetokounmpo. The Heat have been widely linked to the Milwaukee star, and any serious trade package would likely require significant assets, potentially including the No. 13 pick.
If Miami ultimately pursues a blockbuster deal, its interest in Lendeborg may become irrelevant. However, should trade talks fail to materialize, the Michigan standout could remain a strong candidate for the Heat when they make their selection on draft night.
