SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Houston Astros second baseman Jose Altuve exited Tuesday night’s matchup against the San Francisco Giants after being struck on his left foot by a pitch.
The Astros diagnosed Altuve with a bruised foot, and manager Joe Espada said the veteran was experiencing soreness. Altuve underwent imaging on the injured area, which revealed no major damage. Espada added that the team expects to have more information Wednesday.
Altuve was hit by an 82 mph slider from Giants starting pitcher Carson Whisenhunt during the top of the first inning. After being examined by the team’s medical staff, Altuve initially remained in the game and was able to run the bases.
The 36-year-old, two-time World Series champion returned to the field for the bottom half of the inning but did not come back out for the second. Nick Allen took over at second base in his place.
Now in his 16th MLB season, Altuve is batting .240 with 13 home runs and 35 RBIs. Despite Houston’s 4-1 loss to San Francisco, the Astros remain atop the AL West, holding a half-game advantage over the Texas Rangers.
