The Tennessee Volunteers’ defense increases in talent now that their star cornerback has returned.
The Tennessee Volunteers continue to make progress as the football team works through fall camp. The Vols are now entering the second week of camp as they look to get everything in place ahead of their season opener on September 5, 2026, when they will welcome Furman to Knoxville.
There have been plenty of encouraging developments to come out of camp so far, but the team has also dealt with a few setbacks and concerns along the way.
Ty Redmond Is Back With the Team
One of the concerns surrounding Tennessee earlier in camp was the absence of Ty Redmond, who had been away from practice while dealing with an illness. Fortunately for the Volunteers, Redmond has now returned to the team and took part in his first practice of fall camp on Tuesday.
His return is significant for Tennessee, particularly with the expectations surrounding the defense under head coach Jim Knowles. Getting Redmond back on the field gives the standout cornerback valuable time to work his way back into form and develop within the defensive system Knowles has put in place.
If Redmond can build on what he showed last season, he has a chance to establish himself as the next standout cornerback in Tennessee’s program. As a freshman, he displayed many of the qualities teams look for in an elite defensive back.
Perhaps the most impressive part of Redmond’s game was his knack for making plays on the football. During his true freshman season, he recorded three interceptions, leading Tennessee in that category. That ball-hawking ability makes Redmond a difficult matchup for opposing quarterbacks and someone they will likely think twice about challenging.
Ty Redmond Continues to Be a Star With Tennessee Football
At this point, I expect Redmond to be one of Tennessee’s starting outside cornerbacks, with Kayin Lee likely lining up opposite him. Lee is entering his first season with the Volunteers after previously spending time with the Auburn Tigers. In the slot, Qua Moss appears to be the most likely player to round out the starting cornerback group.
Redmond’s role could be extremely important to the success of Tennessee’s defense. The Volunteers will need their top players to consistently perform at a high level, and based on what Redmond showed last season, he appears ready to embrace a much larger role and become one of the key pieces of this defense.
