Houston Football Gets Major Boost Ahead of Friday Night’s Top-25 Clash vs. Texas Tech

Houston appears to have received a significant break ahead of its Friday night showdown with Texas Tech in Lubbock, with several key Red Raiders listed as questionable or ruled out.

The Cougars will face Texas Tech at Galaxy Stadium in the Red Raiders’ Big 12 opener, but the injury report has created some concerns for the home team.

Depth cornerback Amier Boyd will miss the matchup, according to the injury report. Boyd made a crucial interception of Oregon State quarterback Braden Atkinson during Texas Tech’s surprisingly competitive 35-24 victory over the Beavers last weekend.

Outside “Dog” linebacker Trey White is arguably the most notable Texas Tech player carrying a questionable designation. White recorded 129 tackles, 31 tackles for loss, and 19.5 sacks during his time at San Diego State. He has yet to take the field for the Red Raiders this season.

Quarterback Will Hammond could also be without two of his targets. Tight end Terrance Carter Jr. and wide receiver Kenny Johnson are both listed as questionable. Carter missed Week 2 after playing in the season opener, where he recorded three catches for 28 yards. Johnson has nine receptions for 117 yards this season.

Houston Enters Texas Tech Week With Plenty of Momentum

The Cougars are coming off a dominant 77-6 victory over Southern and also performed more convincingly than Texas Tech against their shared opponent, Oregon State.

That gives Houston plenty of momentum heading into Friday night’s matchup, while the Red Raiders now have to contend with several injury concerns. Houston has avoided the same level of attrition affecting its West Texas opponent.

Still, Texas Tech enters the game as more than a touchdown favorite. The Red Raiders will also have home-field advantage and boast one of the more expensive rosters in college football.

For Houston, however, any advantage could prove valuable against the No. 13 team in the country.

Where Could Houston Find Opportunities to Upset Texas Tech?

If Friday’s matchup turns into a high-scoring affair, Houston could have an opportunity to make plays through the air. Hammond has shown an ability to attack downfield, while starting quarterback Conner Weigman will be looking to lead Texas Tech’s offense.

Houston could also benefit if the game becomes a close contest where confidence and execution determine the outcome.

Both teams have vulnerabilities in their secondaries, creating opportunities for each offense to attack through the passing game.

Ultimately, the battle could be decided in the trenches. Houston head coach Willie Fritz emphasized that his team must improve its performance along both lines.

“We’ve got to be better up front on both sides of the ball. They really dominated the defensive line. I thought defensively we played well at times. We’re gonna have to play a clean game. Can’t make simple mistakes, so we’re going to have to play really good,” Fritz said.

Under the Friday night lights, the Lone Star State’s two ranked Big 12 programs will meet with a national audience watching on FOX.

If injuries become a major factor as the game progresses, Houston could have an opportunity to capitalize and potentially hand Texas Tech its first loss in the rivalry since 2009.
