Kentucky Makes Late Push for Top-Five 2027 Prospect AJ Williams

Wildcats enter the recruitment as the highly ranked wing could be nearing a decision

The Kentucky Wildcats have entered the recruitment of one of the most highly regarded players in the 2027 class, and the timing could prove significant.

After already extending offers to numerous elite prospects in the class, Kentucky has now made its interest in top-five wing AJ Williams official. On Tuesday night, Williams announced that head coach Mark Pope and the Wildcats had offered him a scholarship.

The timing is particularly interesting because Williams could be approaching a commitment in the near future.

“Blessed to receive an offer from the University of Kentucky,” Williams posted on social media.

Williams’ recruitment is one to keep a close eye on over the coming weeks. There has been increasing speculation that the five-star prospect could make his decision soon, with one program reportedly emerging as the team to beat.

Kentucky is therefore entering the picture relatively late, but the Wildcats are hoping their offer can shake up the race before Williams makes his final choice.

Williams was originally the No. 1 prospect in the 2028 recruiting class before deciding to reclassify into the 2027 cycle. That move has made him one of the most coveted players available to programs across the country.

BYU Currently Viewed as the Favorite

Kentucky likely has some catching up to do in Williams’ recruitment.

As things currently stand, BYU is considered the frontrunner heading into the final stretch. The Cougars have separated themselves from much of the competition in recent weeks, although several major programs remain involved.

Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, North Carolina, Georgia and Duke are among the other schools pursuing Williams.

That leaves Kentucky with plenty of work to do, but the Wildcats’ late offer could still be meaningful if Williams has not yet made up his mind.

What Makes AJ Williams Such an Intriguing Prospect?

Rivals analyst Jamie Shaw has highlighted several qualities that make Williams such a highly coveted player.

At approximately 6-foot-7, Williams possesses excellent size and length for a wing, along with impressive athletic ability. He is also regarded as an accomplished shot-maker who can create scoring opportunities from multiple levels of the floor.

Williams is not necessarily the type of player who relies on flashy plays or constant highlight-reel moments. Instead, he is known for playing with control, making purposeful decisions and consistently finding ways to contribute.

His size allows him to rebound effectively in his area, while his offensive skill set makes him difficult to defend.

His performance with Team USA has further demonstrated his potential.

During the FIBA U17 World Cup victory over Japan in June, Williams put together a spectacular outing, finishing with 25 points, seven rebounds, two assists and two steals. He shot 7-for-10 from the field, including 5-for-6 from three-point range, and went a perfect 6-for-6 at the free-throw line.

He accomplished all of that in just 15 minutes.

That type of production helps explain why Williams has been viewed as one of the premier prospects in his age group.

Can Kentucky Pull Off a Late Recruiting Surprise?

Kentucky’s timing makes this recruitment especially fascinating.

The Wildcats appear to be entering the race after BYU has established itself as the favorite, but Williams’ decision may not be imminent enough for Kentucky to be completely counted out.

Mark Pope and his staff will have to make up significant ground quickly if they hope to change the direction of the recruitment.

Whether Kentucky arrived too late or made its move at exactly the right moment remains to be seen. For now, the Wildcats have officially put themselves in the mix for one of the best prospects in the 2027 class.
