Fans Rally Around Louisville QB Lincoln Kienholz After Bloody Blow Against Ole Miss

Lincoln Kienholz made an impressive first start for Louisville on Sunday night, but a troubling moment late in the game quickly shifted attention toward the quarterback’s health.

Following Louisville’s narrow 41-38 defeat to No. 9 Ole Miss at Nashville’s Nissan Stadium, video circulating online appeared to show blood around Kienholz’s ear. The footage sparked an immediate wave of concern from fans wondering whether the Cardinals quarterback was okay.

Louisville had not released any official information regarding the apparent injury. In the video, Kienholz can be seen with his helmet partially removed, with blood visible around the area behind his ear and running toward his jaw. The footage did not establish exactly when or how the wound occurred.

It’s important to note that the presence of blood alone does not indicate how serious an injury might be. Under college football rules, a player who is bleeding or has blood on his uniform must temporarily leave the field until the bleeding has been stopped and the affected area is properly covered.

That requirement can make a bloody incident look particularly alarming, but it does not automatically mean the player suffered a concussion, head injury or other significant medical issue.

Still, fans were understandably concerned after seeing Kienholz covered in blood.

The concern came after what was otherwise an outstanding debut for Kienholz. Making his first collegiate start, the quarterback carried a significant portion of Louisville’s offensive workload.

Kienholz completed 18 of 29 passes for 307 yards and two touchdowns, completing 62.1% of his attempts. He also demonstrated his ability as a runner, carrying the ball 14 times for 69 yards and another touchdown.

The exact play that caused the wound remains unknown. Kienholz was sacked three times during the game, and one of those plays could potentially have resulted in the injury, although there is no confirmation of that.

Despite the physical punishment, Kienholz finished the game without throwing an interception and accomplished something noteworthy in Louisville history.

Kienholz’s Experience Already Stands Out

Before arriving at Louisville, he spent three seasons with Ohio State, gaining valuable experience in one of college football’s most competitive programs. He was also recognized as an Ohio State Scholar-Athlete in both 2023 and 2024 and earned Academic All-Big Ten honors during those same seasons.

Another video circulating online showed the wound more clearly, with blood visible behind his ear and extending toward his jaw. Seeing Kienholz continue competing through the physical demands of the game earned him plenty of praise for his toughness.

“Lincoln Kienholz is putting it all on the line,” one fan wrote on X.

The quarterback faced significant pressure throughout the contest as Louisville battled the highly ranked Rebels. His performance was impressive, even though he ultimately couldn’t lead the Cardinals past Ole Miss and quarterback Trinidad Chambliss.

Another fan praised his effort, writing, “Got to give it up to Lincoln Kienholz for his hard work tonight with Louisville.”

Louisville Faces a Quick Turnaround

The Cardinals don’t have much time to recover from the loss. Louisville is scheduled to host Villanova on Friday night, leaving only a short window between games.

At this point, it’s unclear whether Kienholz will need additional medical evaluation or whether Louisville will provide an update before Friday’s matchup. The program had not announced the nature of his apparent wound or confirmed whether he received treatment following Sunday’s game.

Until Louisville or Kienholz offers more information, fans should avoid assuming that the blood seen in the video represents a serious injury.

Kienholz’s toughness also drew an interesting comparison from some fans. Under MLF Football’s post, one commenter asked whether the situation was “Crazier than Josh Hoover of the Hoosiers playing with a bloody nose?”

Indiana quarterback Josh Hoover played through a bloody nose during his season opener against North Texas. North Texas was penalized on the play, and Hoover later said the injury looked “way worse than it felt.”

For now, the biggest takeaway is that Kienholz delivered a memorable performance in his Louisville debut despite the physical demands of the game. The Cardinals will now wait to see whether their new quarterback is ready to take the field again Friday night.
