Petty was injured in the spring, but the update from head coach Brent Key should be encouraging to Georgia Tech fans
Georgia Tech officially kicked off fall camp on Monday as preparations for the 2026 season began on The Flats. With the season opener against Colorado now less than a month away, the Yellow Jackets are ramping up for what they hope will be another strong campaign.
The offensive line has consistently been one of Georgia Tech’s biggest strengths since Brent Key became the program’s full-time head coach. Over the last three seasons, the Yellow Jackets have fielded one of the ACC’s top offensive lines, excelling both in the running game and in pass protection.
This year’s unit will feature three new starters, leaving plenty of questions to answer during the next few weeks of camp. One player who won’t be battling for a spot, however, is former five-star recruit Josh Petty.
Entering his second year in the program, Petty was expected to compete for a starting role before an injury sidelined him throughout the spring. Following Monday’s practice, Key provided an update on the young lineman’s recovery. Although Petty has not yet been cleared to return to practice, the head coach expressed optimism about his progress.
“The guys that have been out, we’ve got Josh (Petty). Josh is way ahead of schedule, but with those things, we are not going to push that thing sooner than it is. Probably that mid-October, the time with him, you know, early October, mid-October. I think it’s four weeks from practicing, full go, and four weeks from playing, something like that. Don’t quote me on it, but somewhere in that time frame. He’s way ahead of schedule.
You know, you’ve got a really superior athlete like him. It’s going to always appear to be a lot quicker than some others. So he’s been able to do that, so I’m really happy with his progression.”
Why This is Encouraging
Petty is widely regarded as one of the most gifted offensive linemen on Georgia Tech’s roster, if not the most talented. His commitment during the 2025 recruiting cycle was a major recruiting win for the Yellow Jackets, who beat out programs such as Ohio State, Oregon, and several other national contenders. While his potential has never been in doubt, there was always an understanding that he would need time to develop at the college level. Carrying the expectations that come with being a five-star recruit can be challenging, but Petty has handled those outside pressures with maturity.
The encouraging news is that Petty is expected to return later this season rather than miss the entire year. Even if he isn’t immediately inserted into the starting lineup, simply getting back on the practice field and accumulating valuable reps will be an important step in his development. For a young offensive lineman, consistent practice time is just as critical as game experience.
Could Petty eventually work his way into the rotation or even compete for a starting role? It’s certainly possible, especially with Georgia Tech breaking in several new starters along the offensive line this season.
That said, earning a spot won’t come easily. Ethan Mackenny appears set at left tackle, while Joseph Ionata is expected to take over as the Yellow Jackets’ starting center. At right guard, Malachi Carney and Markell Samuel are projected to battle for the job. The remaining openings are at left guard and right tackle, although Samuel or third-year lineman Jameson Riggs currently look like the favorites to secure those roles.
Still, if any of the projected starters struggle to meet expectations, Petty has the talent to push for meaningful playing time and potentially claim a starting position.
Ultimately, the biggest takeaway is that Petty’s recovery is progressing well enough for him to return to practice in the coming months instead of remaining sidelined for an extended period. His upside remains undeniable, and there’s every reason to believe he can become a key piece of Georgia Tech’s offensive line in the future.
