Heat rumors: Chad Johnson claims Klay Thompson could be headed to Miami
Former NFL star Chad Johnson believes Klay Thompson will suit up for the Miami Heat during the 2026-27 season, saying he has heard the veteran sharpshooter is destined for South Beach. While LeBron James has also been linked to Miami in free agency, Johnson suggested the Heat could pair Thompson with All-Star Giannis Antetokounmpo—and potentially James—to create a formidable lineup.
Speaking on Shannon Sharpe’s Nightcap podcast, Johnson expressed confidence that Thompson will eventually land in Miami.
“I’m probably not supposed to be saying this, but Klay is going to be there,” Johnson said. “People don’t always believe me, but I’ve been right before. Miami would give him the spacing he needs to get back to doing what he does best—catch and shoot. His production has dipped because of the situations he’s been in, not because he can’t play anymore.”
It remains unclear whether Johnson is sharing inside information or simply speculating about Thompson’s future. The veteran guard is entering the final season of his three-year, $50 million contract with the Dallas Mavericks and is set to earn $17.4 million during the 2026-27 campaign.
Giannis reportedly open to teaming up with LeBron
Miami recently bolstered its perimeter depth by signing veteran guard Tim Hardaway Jr. to a one-year, $6.5 million deal, adding another floor spacer alongside Giannis Antetokounmpo. With the Heat continuing to be mentioned as one of the leading destinations for LeBron James, the possibility of a star-studded roster has generated plenty of buzz.
According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, Antetokounmpo would welcome the opportunity to play alongside James in Miami.
“There’s always an appeal to Miami,” Charania said. “Pat Riley and Erik Spoelstra are major draws, and I haven’t heard of any lingering issues between LeBron and Riley that would prevent a reunion. Bam Adebayo and Giannis are also strong recruiting factors. LeBron has a great relationship with Bam from Team USA, and from what I’ve been told, Giannis would be excited to have LeBron join him.”
Charania also noted that Miami’s lifestyle and financial advantages could factor into James’ decision.
“Basketball, culture, and organizational stability are all important, but so is quality of life,” he explained. “If two teams offer similar opportunities, Miami has obvious advantages—including no state income tax and the appeal of living there year-round.”
If the Heat were to add James while keeping Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo in place, Miami would instantly emerge as one of the NBA’s strongest championship contenders. Adding Thompson would further strengthen the team’s outside shooting and offensive spacing.
