Penn State Suffers Another Recruiting Setback as Jamir Dean Commits to Georgia
Penn State’s 2027 recruiting class continues to experience significant movement. Just one day after securing a notable four-star pledge, the Nittany Lions lost another commitment when wide receiver Jamir Dean announced he was switching his commitment to Georgia.
Dean, a four-star prospect from Tennessee who initially committed to Penn State in May, became the third member of the Nittany Lions’ 2027 class to change schools this month. Earlier in June, cornerbacks Semajay Robinson and Zachary Gleason Jr. also left the class, committing to Virginia and West Virginia, respectively.
Despite the departures, Penn State has added three recruits in June, including four-star edge rusher Elijah Guertin, Rhode Island’s top-ranked player. Guertin chose the Nittany Lions following a recent official visit.
When Dean committed to Penn State on May 1, he was rated as a three-star recruit and ranked among Tennessee’s top prospects. Since then, his stock has risen considerably. He earned a fourth star, climbed to No. 12 in the state rankings, and became the nation’s No. 36 wide receiver according to the 247Sports Composite.
Shortly after pledging to Penn State, Dean received an offer from Georgia. He visited Athens before taking an official trip to Penn State in early June. Although he remained committed following that visit, Dean ultimately chose to join Kirby Smart’s Bulldogs.
Dean has established himself as one of Tennessee’s top multi-sport athletes. At Alcoa High School, he earned first-team all-state honors for the second consecutive season after recording 53 catches for 1,141 yards and 16 touchdowns last year. He also played a key role in Alcoa’s Class 3A state championship basketball team, averaging 13.9 points and 7.6 rebounds during the title run.
What’s Next for Penn State at Wide Receiver?
Dean’s departure leaves Landon Blum, a four-star recruit from Iowa, as the only wide receiver currently committed to Penn State’s 2027 class. Nevertheless, head coach Stan Drayton’s staff remains focused on several high-priority targets.
One of the top remaining prospects is Khalil Taylor, a standout receiver from Pennsylvania’s Pine-Richland High School. Taylor was previously committed to Penn State before coaching changes altered the recruiting landscape. Since re-establishing contact, Penn State has become a strong contender for his commitment. Taylor is also considering programs such as Auburn, Alabama, and Nebraska and is expected to announce his decision on July 6.
Another important target is Deshawn Hall, a four-star receiver from Alabama who recently visited Penn State. Hall’s social media activity following the trip generated optimism among Nittany Lions fans, as he shared photos from campus with a caption referencing Penn State’s famous “We Are” slogan.
Following Dean’s commitment flip, Penn State dropped three spots to No. 10 in the 247Sports Composite rankings for the 2027 recruiting cycle. The Nittany Lions currently hold the third-highest-ranked class in the Big Ten, trailing Oregon and UCLA.
Penn State’s 2027 class now includes 20 committed players, seven of whom are rated as four-star prospects. Among the headliners is Stanley Montgomery, the top-ranked player in Pennsylvania and one of the nation’s top overall recruits.
