The Tennessee Volunteers will now have to find his replacement.
The Tennessee Volunteers are steadily working their way toward the start of the 2026 season, with their Sept. 5 matchup against Furman quickly approaching.
The season opener is expected to give fans a first look at several newcomers, while also providing an opportunity for returning players who have made significant strides during the offseason to show what they can bring to the team.
One player generating plenty of interest heading into the season is safety Edrees Farooq. The Maryland native has spent several seasons at Tennessee after initially joining the program as a three-star recruit.
Farooq has continued to develop during his time on Rocky Top and enters the upcoming season as one of the returning players Tennessee fans will be watching closely.
Edrees Farooq Suffers an Injury
Farooq had been turning heads throughout the offseason before suffering a serious setback on Friday, Aug. 14. The Tennessee safety sustained a leg injury that forced him to leave the field in an ambulance.
He was taken to UT Medical Center, where he was expected to undergo further evaluation and learn the extent of the injury. While Tennessee fans remained hopeful for positive news, the circumstances surrounding the injury suggested Farooq could be facing a significant recovery period.
Edrees Farooq’s Injury Diagnosis
The news surrounding Edrees Farooq became even tougher for Tennessee after his diagnosis was confirmed. The standout safety suffered a torn patellar tendon, an injury that will keep him out for the entire 2026 season and could extend his recovery into next offseason.
Farooq’s absence leaves a significant hole in Tennessee’s secondary, forcing the Volunteers to lean on their depth at the safety position. Michigan transfer TJ Metcalf is expected to remain one of the starters, while Penn State transfer Dejuan Lane is now in line for an even bigger role as he enters the starting lineup after joining the Vols through the transfer portal.
The loss is especially painful considering the impact Farooq made in 2025. He emerged as one of Tennessee’s biggest playmakers on defense, recording four forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and two interceptions. Along with his physical presence as a tackler, he also proved to be effective in coverage, finishing the year with three pass breakups.
Heading into 2026, Farooq was widely viewed as one of the Vols’ breakout stars and a key piece of the defense. Instead, Tennessee will now have to move forward without one of its most productive defensive playmakers.
