Robert Thomas Could Headline 2026 Offseason Blockbuster
One of the biggest potential moves of the upcoming NHL offseason could center around Robert Thomas of the St. Louis Blues.
Thomas was a constant subject of trade speculation throughout the past season, with his name tied to numerous contenders as the NHL trade deadline approached. Despite the heavy rumors, no deal materialized, and he remained in St. Louis. Still, as the playoff picture narrows, those discussions are expected to heat up again.
One team frequently mentioned in connection with Thomas was the Utah Mammoth, which reportedly came close to acquiring him before backing away due to the Blues’ steep asking price. After an early exit in the 2026 Stanley Cup playoffs, Utah could revisit the idea of pursuing a top-line center.
Other teams looking to shake up their rosters—such as the Toronto Maple Leafs, Edmonton Oilers, and New York Rangers—may also view Thomas as a foundational piece. However, the real challenge lies in meeting St. Louis’ demands.
High Price Tag for St. Louis
The Blues are reportedly seeking a massive return for Thomas, including a first-round pick, a top-tier prospect, and additional valuable assets. A deal similar in scale to one involving Quinn Hughes has been floated as a rough comparison.
That kind of package would be difficult for most teams to assemble. Even interested contenders may struggle to offer multiple premium assets in a single trade.
If St. Louis does find a willing partner, though, the return could be franchise-altering. Combined with their emerging young core, such a haul could quickly push the Blues back into contention.
Trade Still Unlikely—for Now
Despite the speculation, a Thomas trade is far from guaranteed. The 26-year-old holds a full no-trade clause, giving him complete control over any potential destination.
That added layer of control complicates negotiations, especially if interested teams aren’t among his preferred options. There’s also no indication he’s pushing for a move, unlike situations involving players such as Artemi Panarin in the past.
At this point, Thomas appears comfortable staying in St. Louis, which is encouraging for Blues fans. While the possibility of a blockbuster deal can’t be ruled out, the odds of a trade don’t seem particularly high—at least for now.
