Giants Receive Encouraging Update on New Infielder Marcelo Mayer
The San Francisco Giants made one of the more intriguing moves at the MLB trade deadline when they sent reliever Erik Miller to the Boston Red Sox in exchange for promising young infielder Marcelo Mayer. Now, the Giants could finally be close to seeing their newest acquisition take the field.

San Francisco made it clear at the trade deadline that it was shifting its focus toward the future. After a disappointing stretch of play, the Giants moved several established players and brought back younger talent who could contribute both now and in the years ahead.
One of the most notable moves was the decision to trade Miller to Boston. The reliever had been enjoying a productive season, while the Red Sox were looking to strengthen their bullpen during their push for an AL Wild Card spot. For San Francisco, however, the deal provided an opportunity to add a former top draft pick with significant upside.
Mayer was selected fourth overall by Boston in the 2018 MLB Draft and entered professional baseball with considerable expectations. His talent remains evident, but injuries have been a recurring obstacle throughout his young career.
Unfortunately for the Giants, Mayer arrived in San Francisco while still dealing with an injury, meaning the organization has yet to see its new infielder play in a game. That could change soon, though, as his rehabilitation appears to be progressing.
Marcelo Mayer Could Make Giants Debut Soon
According to Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area, Mayer could potentially join the Giants toward the end of their upcoming series in Cleveland. However, Tuesday appears to be too soon, with the organization intent on making sure he completes his rehabilitation before returning.
If everything goes according to plan, Mayer could be ready to make his Giants debut as early as next weekend.
The Giants are understandably taking a careful approach with their new infielder. After dealing with injuries, rushing Mayer back would make little sense, particularly given his long-term importance to the organization.
Mayer also offers San Francisco plenty of defensive flexibility. During his time with Boston, he has played shortstop, second base and third base, with second base accounting for most of his starts this season.
For his part, Mayer appears willing to play wherever the Giants need him. He has made it clear that his priority is helping the team win and becoming as comfortable as possible at whichever position the organization assigns him.
With his return potentially approaching, Giants fans may soon get their first look at the young infielder who could become an important piece of San Francisco’s future.
