Indiana Fever head coach Stephanie White experienced a noticeable change in reception from the team’s fan base this week.
After being booed by some Fever fans during introductions before Tuesday’s game against the New York Liberty, White received a much warmer welcome Friday against the Dallas Wings, with cheers replacing the earlier boos.
The shift came after several Fever players, including Caitlin Clark and Sophie Cunningham, publicly backed their head coach following the criticism. White acknowledged the support during her postgame press conference and said it meant a lot to her personally.
“We love each other in that locker room,” White said, emphasizing that the team considers itself a family. She explained that being a family does not mean everyone always agrees, but it does mean supporting one another when things get difficult.
White also praised the Indiana fan base, particularly those she considers the team’s true supporters, while expressing gratitude for her players and coaching staff for helping lift her up during a difficult stretch.
The controversy began after Cunningham took a hard foul from Chicago Sky guard DiJonai Carrington. When asked about the play afterward, White said she agreed with the officials’ decision but did not believe the contact was malicious or intentional.
Some Fever fans took issue with those comments, believing White had not done enough to defend her own player. Their frustration was evident when they booed her before the Liberty game.
However, the Fever players quickly made their feelings known. Clark admitted that hearing the home crowd boo White “made her a little sick,” while Aliyah Boston and others also defended their coach.
The team has since responded on the court, winning three straight games. The latest victory came Friday, when Indiana defeated the Dallas Wings 98-87.
After a turbulent week, White appears to have regained the support of the Fever faithful—and her players have made it clear they have her back.
