USC Trojans Secure First Commitment of 2028 Recruiting Class With QB Trey Wright
The USC Trojans have landed their first commitment of the 2028 recruiting cycle, receiving a pledge from three-star quarterback Trey Wright of Lone Star High School in Frisco, Texas.
Wright announced his decision Saturday, choosing USC over Oregon, Kentucky, SMU and Arizona.
“All glory to God. Blessed beyond words to be in this position. The next chapter starts now. USC Nation, let’s get to it. Fight On!!!” Wright said, according to On3’s Hayes Fawcett.
Wright became the first and only quarterback in the 2028 class to receive an offer from USC when head coach Lincoln Riley extended him a scholarship on Aug. 8. The Trojans quickly made their interest clear, and Wright ultimately decided to continue his career in Los Angeles.
What USC Is Getting in Trey Wright
The 5-foot-11, 185-pound quarterback has already established himself as one of the most intriguing young players in Texas. During the 2025 season, Wright produced an incredible 5,826 total yards while leading Lone Star to the Class 5A UIL state championship game.
He passed for 4,062 yards and 43 touchdowns while adding 1,798 rushing yards and 16 touchdowns on the ground. His remarkable sophomore campaign earned him MaxPreps Sophomore First Team All-American recognition.
Wright’s skill set has drawn comparisons to former Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray, another Texas native who won the 2018 Heisman Trophy while playing under Riley.
The young quarterback combines impressive arm strength with accuracy and touch, particularly on deep throws. He is comfortable working from the pocket but can also extend plays and make things happen when the original play breaks down. His creativity and athleticism fit the type of quarterback Riley has traditionally preferred.
Beyond football, Wright is also a standout basketball player and already holds Division I offers in that sport. Although he is currently rated as a three-star prospect, another strong season could result in a significant rise up the national recruiting rankings.
USC has already secured four-star quarterback Jonas Williams in the 2026 class and is not expected to take a quarterback in the 2027 cycle. Wright now gives the Trojans an early foundation at the position for 2028.
Who Could Be Next for USC in 2028?
With Wright now committed, attention will turn toward several other top prospects USC is pursuing in the 2028 class.
Two California prospects stand out immediately: Mater Dei four-star safety Ace Leutele and Corona Centennial three-star running back Malaki Davis.
Leutele has deep ties to USC. He grew up attending games and tailgating at the Coliseum while watching his older cousins play. He has remained a frequent visitor to campus and has developed strong relationships with members of the Trojans’ coaching staff, particularly Aaron Amaama.
USC has also strengthened its recruiting pipeline with Mater Dei in recent years. The Trojans have multiple freshmen from the powerhouse program, along with a commitment from 2027 four-star cornerback Danny Lang. Four-star cornerback Aaryn Washington, who is committed to IMG Academy, also previously played at Mater Dei.
Leutele has made no secret of his interest in USC and the possibility of playing in Los Angeles alongside former teammates. Being close to home could also work in the Trojans’ favor.
Davis is another in-state prospect who appears to have strong ties to USC. He has visited campus at least four times this year, with USC being the only school he visited during the summer. Running backs coach Anthony Jones has also made multiple trips to see Davis and has built a close relationship with both the running back and his family.
Davis attended several games at the Coliseum last season and is expected to remain a regular visitor this fall. He also recently connected with one of his childhood idols, former USC Heisman Trophy-winning running back Marcus Allen.
Another local prospect worth monitoring is St. John Bosco four-star interior offensive lineman Elisha Mueller.
With Wright now on board, USC has its first piece of the 2028 recruiting class. Riley and his staff will look to build on that momentum as they pursue some of the top prospects in California and across the country.
