Razorbacks Basketball Continues Gaining Momentum Under John Calipari
The Arkansas Razorbacks enjoyed a busy and successful Thursday, highlighted by positive developments across multiple sports and continued momentum for John Calipari’s basketball program. From the reinstatement of the men’s and women’s tennis teams to rising NBA Draft stock for several basketball players, Arkansas athletics continues to strengthen its national profile.
One major development for the basketball program was the rise of forward Abdou Toure to consensus five-star status. Arkansas secured the No. 1 recruiting class according to Rivals/On3 and No. 2 according to 247Sports, trailing only Duke despite signing four five-star recruits. Toure, who had steadily climbed recruiting rankings throughout the cycle, officially earned five-star recognition across all major recruiting services after a standout senior season.
Toure captured consecutive Connecticut Gatorade Player of the Year honors and earned the Allen Iverson National Player of the Year award after averaging 25 points, seven rebounds, and three assists per game. He also helped Notre Dame High School win another Southern Connecticut Conference title and reach the Division I state semifinals. Despite being overlooked for the McDonald’s All-American Game, Toure impressed scouts at the Nike Hoops Summit with his scoring ability, athleticism, perimeter defense, and transition play.
Meanwhile, Arkansas forward Trevon Brazile boosted his NBA Draft stock during the NBA Combine. Playing for Team Rivers in scrimmages, Brazile posted 16 points and nine rebounds while showcasing his shooting touch and versatility. He also avoided committing a foul or turnover during the game, a strong sign for NBA evaluators.
Brazile stood out athletically as well, recording the highest vertical reach at the combine at 12 feet, 6.5 inches. He also posted a 41.5-inch vertical jump and performed well in speed and agility testing, ranking near the top among participants.
Another major storyline involves guard Meleek Thomas, whose NBA Draft decision remains uncertain. While Arkansas could still field a talented roster if Thomas stays in the draft — featuring incoming freshmen Jordan Smith Jr., JJ Andrews, Toure, and five-star forward Mikka Muurinen — his draft stock continues to rise. Thomas has recently been projected as a late first-round pick by several major outlets, including ESPN, NBC Sports, Yahoo Sports, Bleacher Report, and CBS Sports.
The 6-foot-3 shooting guard averaged 16 points, four rebounds, and three assists per game last season while shooting efficiently from the field, three-point range, and the free-throw line. Although he could return to Arkansas and benefit from NIL opportunities, many believe pursuing the NBA now may be the logical next step.
Overall, Calipari’s program continues building national momentum through elite recruiting, player development, and growing NBA attention.
