Broncos Add Depth and Upside to Wide Receiver Group with Hakeem Butler Signing
The Denver Broncos made a notable addition to their receiving corps ahead of mandatory minicamp, signing veteran wide receiver Hakeem Butler, according to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo.
Originally selected by the Arizona Cardinals in the fourth round of the 2019 NFL Draft, Butler’s professional journey has included stops in the NFL, the Canadian Football League, and most recently the United Football League. While playing for the St. Louis Battlehawks, Butler revitalized his career, earning UFL Offensive Player of the Year honors in both 2024 and 2026.
At 6-foot-5 and 242 pounds, Butler brings a rare blend of size and athleticism. During his collegiate career at Iowa State, he recorded 110 catches for 2,149 yards and 18 touchdowns over three seasons. His impressive athletic testing at the NFL Scouting Combine—including a 4.48-second 40-yard dash and a 36-inch vertical leap—once projected him as a potential second-round draft pick.
Scouting reports praised Butler’s length, downfield speed, and ability to make contested catches while generating yards after the catch. However, concerns about his route-running precision and inconsistent hands contributed to his slide in the draft and limited NFL opportunities.
With organized team activities complete, Butler will participate in Denver’s three-day mandatory minicamp, where he’ll have an opportunity to compete for a spot heading into training camp later this summer.
What the Signing Means
Although the Broncos already have a crowded wide receiver room, Butler represents a low-risk, high-upside addition. His physical traits and recent production in the UFL make him an intriguing developmental prospect who could earn a longer look from the coaching staff.
Breaking into the top of Denver’s receiver depth chart will be difficult, with players such as Jaylen Waddle, Courtland Sutton, Troy Franklin, and Pat Bryant already established. However, Butler could challenge for a reserve role or practice-squad consideration alongside players like Lil’Jordan Humphrey, Michael Bandy, and undrafted rookie Dane Key.
Head coach Sean Payton recently emphasized the value of competition within the receiver group, noting that adding talented players raises the performance level across the entire unit. The Broncos believe the increased depth and skill diversity at the position will help strengthen the offense moving forward, and Butler now has an opportunity to prove he belongs in those plans.
