Joe Root Urges Smarter Test Cricket as England Begin New Era Under Stephen Fleming
Joe Root believes England must adopt a more intelligent approach to Test cricket as he prepares for a second spell as captain alongside newly appointed head coach Stephen Fleming.
Root was confirmed as England captain this week, returning to the role after replacing Ben Stokes. The 35-year-old previously stepped down in 2022 after leading the side in 64 Tests, admitting the pressures of captaincy had left him exhausted.
His first assignment will be a three-match Test series against Pakistan, England’s first since Stokes resigned during the home series defeat to New Zealand in June. Root will also captain the team on tours of South Africa and Bangladesh before leading England in the standalone 150th anniversary Test against Australia in March and next summer’s Ashes series.
During Stokes’ tenure, England embraced an aggressive, attacking style under the guidance of coach Brendon McCullum. While the approach initially produced impressive results, performances have dipped in recent times.
Speaking to the ECB, Root praised the transformation achieved under Stokes and McCullum but stressed that the team now needs to add greater tactical awareness.
Reflecting on the past four years, Root described the period as the most enjoyable of his career, highlighting how the team’s fearless mindset allowed players to express themselves freely. However, he said England must now improve their decision-making by recognising when to attack and when to absorb pressure, believing a more balanced approach will make the side even harder to beat.
Root emphasised that England should not abandon the progress made during the “Bazball” era. Instead, he wants to build on its strengths while refining certain aspects of the team’s game to become more disciplined and adaptable.
He also revealed that Stephen Fleming’s appointment played a major role in convincing him to return as captain. Although Fleming has not previously coached a Test team, Root pointed to his extensive achievements as both a player and a white-ball coach.
After speaking with the former New Zealand captain, Root said he was inspired by Fleming’s vision for England and excited about the direction he wants to take the team. He expressed confidence that, together, they can create something special and help England return to consistent success in Test cricket.
